5 Reasons Why You Should Quit Smoking
Understanding the various health reasons why you really need to quit smoking may make it easier for you to give up your strong addiction. Even though there have been many cases where people have lived to an old age despite having smoked for a large part of their lives, there’re also cases where people have died due to the serious damage caused by smoking. Hence you should always err on the side of caution by kicking your habit. The following are health reasons why you should quit smoking.
1. Lung cancer is a condition that is directly tied to smoking but there’re other illnesses & diseases that can spring from smoking as well. That is why it’s important to learn about these illnesses, so that you can begin your journey to a healthier, non-smoking life.
2. Alzheimer’s disease appears to afflict more smokes. A recent study has found that senior citizens who smoke mentally decline five times more often than non-smokers do. Also, smoking can cause arterial damage, which increases blood clot incidence & hence, the risk of having a stroke. It’s scary to experience a mental decline as you age. If you quit smoking, you can reduce this risk.
3. Females who want to have babies should quit smoking. You can cause harm to your fetus if you smoke during pregnancy. Pregnant smokers have been found to have babies that are smaller in size & weight. Due to being smaller, these babies have undue problems when their mothers go through labor & delivery. These problems normally are respiratory related. Even after the birth, you’re also putting your small baby at a higher risk of dying from SIDS, or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, compared to other children. Some studies have found that the risk is up to twice or two times as much than babies of non-smokers.
4. Colic is more common in babies whose parents smoke. Colic refers to incessant crying
from babies who pull up their legs & scream in pain. This misery can start at about one month of age & may continue for a period of two or three months. A very good number of studies have found that smoking increases the level of motilin, which is a hormone that contracts the intestines & stomach. This affects the function of the digestion system which in turn affects colic.
5. As a smoker, you may find yourself snoring more often compared to non-smokers. While snoring isn’t life threatening, it can affect your quality of sleep. Snoring can also cause relationship problems with your spouse if you do not quit smoking.
You should quit smoking as there’re enough reasons to show that this habit is really not a good one to keep. You may not have fully realized about their harmful effects previously. But there is no excuse now, after reading this article.
