Weight Gain - Pregnancy

Ah, the joys of motherhood. Most new moms will agree that nothing can compare. Except the stretch marks & weight gain during pregnancy. Oy vey! Don’t worry, mothers-to-be. Next to delivery of a healthy baby, there’s another light at the end of the tunnel.

Weight gain during pregnancy is natural & to be expected. Several things cause pregnancy weight. The actual weight of your baby, retained fluid, increased blood volume, & amniotic fluid are just some of the things that contribute to weight gain in pregnancy.

Healthy pregnancy weight gain for a woman of normal pre-pregnancy weight is 25 to 35 pounds. There is more. This recommended range will vary depending on whether the mother-to-be is over-weight or underweight. This should be discussed with your doctor.

One of the biggest misconceptions amongst mothers-to-be is that they’re “eating for two,” meaning that it is acceptable to double up on food intake. And so… So far so good. While you should consume extra calories for your growing baby, you needn’t consume twice or two times your regular caloric intake. Actually, an extra 200-300 calories per day is about all you need. You want to make certain that those are not “empty” calories, however. Make every calorie count by consume nutrient-rich foods, such as fruit & vegetables.

Weight gain during pregnancy does not have to mean that you will never get back to your pre-pregnancy weight. Allow yourself some indulgence & give in to a few of your cravings, but commit to eating nutrient-packed foods daily to allow for healthy, slow & steady weight gain. Your baby & your body will thank you!
