Insulin deficiency or resistance compromises the body tissues access to essential nutrients for fuel & storage. Insulin is also needed to synthesize protein & store fats.

Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, contributing to more than 213,000 deaths annually. Diabetes can occur in children with other diseases such as cystic fibrosis. Diabetes treatment can sometimes cause blood glucose levels to drop too low, with resultant hypoglycemia.
