How I quit smoking cigarettes & you can quit, too. Quitting smoking can be the hardest thing a person can do, but it can be done. I was a smoker for over twenty years, including at least sixteen years as a heavy smoker; which I consider one & a ½ to two packs a day. I was able to quit by using motivational techniques & a nicotine replacement therapy.

The best motivation I’ve found to quit smoking is anger. Whenever I had a cigarette craving, I would remind myself of the anger behind my decision & vowed never to smoke ever again. I attempted to imagine Think all the ways corporations over the decades have peddled dangerous & addictive product to the masses using the most sophisticated advertising available to target children & the impoverished.

If that isn’t enough, think of all the deaths directly attributable to the use of cigarettes. Use that information to get very angry & decide never to put any more money in the pockets of the legal scoundrels.

Another technique is to notice how much cigarette advertising you see during the course of even one single day. I can not go anywhere in town without seeing signs at gas stations, liquor stores & even the supermarket checkout lines. This advertising is targeted to smokers & those attempting to quit & it’s everywhere. Whenever I see a reference to any brand of cigarettes in advertising or even in television & movies, I get really angry & remind myself exactly how much I hate the manufacturers & marketers of this fatal product.

Another technique I used & you can use too is to calculate how much money you have spent on cigarettes over the years. In my case, 1.5 packs of smokes at $3 a pack means I spent about $4.50 per day for twenty years. 20 x 365 days equals 7300 days. 7300 days at $4.50 a day means I spent at least $32,850 on cigarettes. Wow. That is a lot of hard earned cash up in smoke. Even thinking about that money now, six years after quitting I get angry & channel that angry to motivate me into never thinking about quitting.

As for nicotine replacement therapies, my choice was Nicolette gum. The gum gave me the nicotine I craved without having to succumb to urges to smoke a cigarette and, it turns out, it’s much cheaper than cigarettes. I’ve been nicotine & cigarette free & I’ve never regretted my decision. Here is hoping that you’re able to break the habit & save yourself years of grief.
