Epidemiology: Asthma – Stable prevalence rates in all age groups will lead to stable case numbers

Introduction

Datamonitor estimates that there were 63.7 million total asthma cases in all ages in the seven major markets (the US, Japan, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK) in 2010, forecasted to rise to 65.7 million total cases by 2020. Due to stable prevalence rates of asthma, population changes are responsible for the small change in the number of cases during this time.

Features and benefits

* Gain insight into market potential, including a robust 10-year asthma epidemiology forecast of current asthma prevalent cases.* Understand the key epidemiologic risk factors associated with asthma.

Highlights

Datamonitor expects to see a small increase in the number of prevalent current asthma cases from 2010 to 2020 in the seven major markets (the US, Japan, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK). The number of asthma cases is expected to increase from approximately 63.7 million cases in 2010 to 65.7 million cases in 2020.

The largest increase in the number of current asthma cases is expected in the US. Between 2010 and 2020, the number of total prevalent cases of asthma will increase by 0.7% annually. The largest decrease will be in Japan, decreasing at 0.2% annually.

Types of Asthma

Asthma is a growing worldwide problem. Asthma is classified in various ways. Traditionally, doctors have categorised asthma into two general groups, Extrinsic (allergic) asthma and Intrinsic (non-allergic) asthma, depending upon the types of stimuli that flare up these attacks.

Extrinsic (allergic) asthma:

More prevalent in the younger age group, extrinsic asthma is caused by the immune system’s response to inhaled allergens such as pollen, animal dander or dust mite particles. People with allergic asthma frequently have other allergy-related problems such as hay fever, rhinitis, skin rashes, eczema.

Extrinsic asthma responds quite well to the use of inhaled steroids as these suppress the immune system.Intrinsic (non-allergic) asthma-

Intrinsic asthma is caused by anything except an allergy. It may be caused by an infection, stress, laughter, exercise, cold air, food preservatives or a host of other factors.

Treatment of intrinsic asthma is not easy as it may not be known what triggers the asthma in the first place and therefore avoiding triggers can be impossible.

Mixed asthma -

As the name suggests, mixed asthma is a mixture of intrinsic and extrinsic asthma. Not only do people react to some allergies but their asthma is also triggered by other factors.

It is common for someone with an extrinsic form of asthma to experience attacks when he has a chest infection – an intrinsic trigger.

Other types of asthma include:

Childhood asthma -

This form of asthma occurs as a child, and most of the time, you outgrow it on growing up. This happens because body goes through a number of functional/hormonal changes while growing up. The treatment of childhood asthma is quite similar to adult asthma as the cause is no different.

Adult-onset asthma -

Adult-onset asthma usually develops after the age of 20, and it affects more women than men. Allergens play a significant role in adults becoming asthmatic. Asthma can actually start at any age and in a wide variety of situations. Another major cause of adult asthma is exposure at work to animal products, plastic, pollution, mites, wood dust, or metals.

Bronchial asthma -

Bronchial asthma is an allergic reaction associated with extreme breathing difficulties and wheezing. The muscles wrapped around the airways, become narrow and spasm. Thick mucus is usually produced in large quantities and the airways become irritated. Most of the attacks are triggered by hyper-sensitivity to air-borne particles(dust, pollen) or any sort of allergy to foods.

Seasonal Asthma -

Seasonal asthma can be triggered by trees, fruits, seeds, grasses or flowers releasing pollen in the air or during any particular climate. For example, some people may have their asthma aggravated during the cold winter season, while others find spring is particularly bad with the increase in flowering plants and air pollen.

Silent Asthma -

Such asthma attacks give very little or no prior warning. They are usually severe and can be even life-threatening.

Nocturnal Asthma

This type of asthma induces wheezing only at night, especially in the wee hours of morning. It is triggered by allergens in home such as dust and pet hair or is caused by sinus conditions. The patient may have wheezing or short breath when lying down or may not notice these symptoms until awoken by them in the middle of the night, usually between 2 and 4am.

A useful treatment in this case is to take a steroid inhaler before going to bed. This reduces the tendency of the airways to narrow. Another measure is to wash bed linen regularly to kill dust mites that cause irritation.

This type of asthma is more difficult to recognize as there are no daytime symptoms, and usually delay proper treatment.

Sports asthma/Exercise-induced asthma -

Shortness of breath and coughing occurring after an exhausting exercise is termed exercise-induced asthma. This is believed to be a reaction to changes in temperature of air in the lung. This phenomenon happens in up to 80% of people with recognized asthma.

Exercise-induced asthma involves symptoms that usually occur about 5-20 minutes after beginning an exercise that involves breathing through the mouth. Sport activities that require continuous strenuous activity or that are played in cold weather are very dangerous and the most likely to trigger an asthma attack.

Precautions include using a bronchodilator inhaler just prior to the sports activity and deep nasal breathing until the body feels warmed up.

Cough variant asthma -

Coughing can occur alone, without the other symptoms of asthma that are usually present. Cough variant asthma causes great difficulty for the doctor to accurately diagnose the true underlying cause of asthma because it can be easily confused with other conditions, such as bronchitis or hay fever or sinusitis. Coughing can occur anytime – day or night.

Occupational asthma -

Occupational asthma occurs due to a trigger in the place of work. Common triggers include pollutants in the air, such as smoke, chemicals, fumes, dust, or other particles; respiratory diseases, such as colds and flu; allergens in the air, such as molds, animal hair, bird feathers, and pollen; extremes of temperature or humidity; and emotional changes.

Most of the trigger substances are very commonly found, and are not normally hazardous. In most people with occupational asthma, the symptoms appear a short time after initiating work and disappear after abandoning the job premises.

Allergy asthma -

This type of asthma is synonymous with a running and blotchy nose, itchy eyes, sneezing, and coughing. Steroid inhalers are used in this condition which soothe the air passages. The best preventive method is to avoid the triggering substances. Allergy desensitization treatment is also a possible option which works by gradually exposing the body to minute amounts of the allergic substance and working up to normal amounts without causing a reaction.

Steroid-resistant asthma -

While most of patients respond to regular steroid therapy, particularly inhaled glucocorticoids (GCs), some are steroid resistant. Glucocorticoids act in asthma by reducing airway inflammation and immune activation. However, patients with steroid resistant asthma have higher levels of immune activation in their airways.

acid and reflux is scientifically known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). It is a disease characterized by the abnormal reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus resulting to chronic symptoms or mucosal damage. The acid and reflux pillow wedge is a terrific remedy for reflux and heartburn sufferers. Consider: around 80% of those people who continually have reflux and heartburn problems also find these problems to be intensified at nighttime and while sleeping.
Long-Term care for Asthma Treatments

Long term care of asthma focuses on preventing irritated airways or preventing chemicals in the patient’s body that may cause airways to constrict and swell. Long term care of asthma should concentrate on preventing chemicals in the body which will likely cause allergy symptoms. Allergy symptoms is only one aspect of blocking asthma triggers which will most likely initiate an asthma attack. The goal for long term treatment is using medication that relaxes airways and reduces inflammation. In considering whether a patient should consider a long term treatment they should take into account how many times they need to use their inhaler. Physicians seem to agree that if patients need to use a rescue inhaler more than 3 times a week, then a long term care of asthma should be reevaluated and discussed with a physician.

Some long term care treatments consist of inhaled corticosteroids. There are a number of inhaled steroids. Even though these are steroids, they are not equivalent to steroids used to increase muscle mass. Corticosteroids are designed to diminish swelling in the airways and increase strength in the patient’s lungs. Brand name corticosteroids which are often inhaled are brand names such as: Flovent, Azmacort, Advair, Beclovent, Aerobid or Pulmicort. Medications such as these are routinely taken orally and the patientwill most likely take the medication anywhere from 2-4 times per day. Corticosteroids often come in the form of a round disc or a similar device which allows the user to inhale the medication. Even though these medications have proved to be valuable to some patients suffering from asthma some of these medications have side effects and ought to be discussed with a physician prior to treatment. In addition to corticosteroids there are also Leukotriene Modifiers which are taken in pill form. The most recognized brand names of Leukotriene Modifiers consist of Serevent, Fordil or Volmax. These medications were created to facilitate long term treatment asthma. Like Corticosteroids, Leukotriene Modifiers are not designed to provide quick relief for an asthma attack. Leukotriene Modifiers are designed to prevent or reduce swelling in the airways and lungs. Leukotriene is often used both alone and in combination with other medications such as corticosteroids. These are used to treat mild to moderate asthma symptoms.

Short -Term care for Asthma Treatments

Short term care treatments were established to swiftly offer relief to muscles surrounding airways which consistently tighten when an asthma attack occurs. Using inhalers as part of the quick relief treatment and should be used when the individual begins to feel their chest tighten, they start to cough, wheezing begins or they start to experience shortness of breath. Quick care treatments consist of Beta-2 agonists treatments. This is one of the most recognizable medications treatments of asthma. These Beta -2 agonists can be recognized as the inhalers people suffering from asthma carry. Inhalers are for temporary relief and are often used to prevent full blown asthma attacks. One of the benefits of inhalers is their ability to reduce the asthmatics anxiety and stress which as the ability to launch the person’s asthma attack. If the asthmatic uses short term treatments more than twice weekly this is a sign the person most likely does not have their asthma in control and should seek medical advice to try to get better control over their asthma. Albuterol is the most recognized bronchodilator or other wise mostly recognized as inhalers. Other beta-2 agonist medication used in treating short term asthma is brand names such as: Proventil, Ventolin, Xopenex, Maxair, Alupent or Atrovent. Many of these medications appear to have similar side affects. Common side affects include slight tremors with an increase in the individual’s heart rate.

In summary, there are two methods to treat asthma in order to prevent asthma attacks. The first is a long-term treatment with the second being a short- term treatment of asthma. The primary goal is preventing allergens from affecting the asthmatic while reducing inflammation of the airways. In the end using both methods to monitor your asthma using tools such as the peak flow meter will help asthmatics succeed in their asthma treatment.

In most cases causes for asthma are unknown; people with a family history of asthma, frequent respiratory infections, constant exposure to air pollutants and being overweight are many risk factors for suffering from asthma. At this time there is no cure.

There are two types of asthma, allergic asthma and non-allergic asthma. Allergic, or extrinsic asthma, is caused by allergic reactions, which are complex exaggerated immune system responses to allergens like pet dander, mold and pollutants. Allergic asthma is the most common form of asthma. It affects more than 50 percent of the 20 million asthma-sufferers.

Some allergic reactions that set asthma off are triggers including exposure to environmental things like dust, tobacco smoke and mold. Other triggers are outdoor air pollution, cockroach allergens and pets. Magazines like Real Simple, Good Housekeeping and Parenting often offer tips on making your home allergen-proof.

Non-allergic asthma sufferers experience the same kind of symptoms as allergic-asthma sufferers; causes however are not related to allergies. Common non-allergic asthma symptoms are strenuous physical exercise, bad weather, hyperventilation, viruses or even stress. With non-allergic asthma, the immune system does not react. For more information on how to cope with non-allergic asthma triggers read magazines like Body + Soul, Health and Women’s Health.

Doctors use a spirometry, or lung function test to diagnose asthma. The spirometry meausures the largest amount of exhaled air after take a very deep breath. If your primary care physician suspects a patient may be suffering from allergic asthma, he/she may want that patient to see an allergist, a doctor that specializes in treating allergic diseases.

There are many different courses of treatment for asthma patients. The two main categories of asthma medicines are quick-relief and long-term control. Quick-relief medicines control symptoms of an asthma attack when they are happening. Long-term medicines contribute to overall well-being.

Scientists are studying asthma at many medical research institutes and they are making progress in their findings. In the July 2008 issue of Prevention magazine, the magazine reports that the Georgia Tech Research Institute is developing sensors that monitor air quality for asthma sufferers to wear in their pockets. Also, in the same issue of Prevention magazine, the magazine reports scientists at the University of Texas at Galveston have discovered proteins in asthma patients may be evidence of different sub-types of asthma. Still, Prevention reports a new drug called Pitrakinra may help reduce the body’s response to allergens and reduce asthma symptoms. The maker of the drug is currently running clinical trials.

A good way to keep up with asthma-treatment news is to subscribe to health magazines like Prevention, Men’s Health and Women’s Health. Also, general interest magazines like Time magazine and Newsweek magazine regularly report on health trends like asthma.

Asthma is an obstructive respiratory condition characterized by recurrent attacks of shortness of breath, wheezing, rapid breathing and an irritated cough. Between the ages of 3 and 8 years asthma can be found in children. Wheezing, a whistle type sound, is caused when the air flows into the lungs during an asthma attack.
When the child exhales normally, mild wheezing happens, and when he exhales deeply, more severe wheezing sounds are heard. In case of extreme asthma, wheezing may be absent as no air is passing through airways.

It can be related to other disease conditions, such as hay fever and eczema. It can also be associated with aspirin sensitivity or any forms of allergy based on the person, such as mould spores, pollen, house dust mites, dogs, cats and many more.

Medications and Treatment

The best type of medication for the treatment of an asthma allergy involves a substance, which is able to decrease the inflammation of the lining of the respiratory system. Some of these medications function by decreasing the production of other chemicals, which cause inflammation and narrowing of the lumen of the bronchi and bronchioles. It is important to seek help quickly so this type of medication can be administered quickly in the event of an acute asthma attack.

Asthma medicine helps prevent the symptoms of asthma that inhibit the possibility of doing activities that you want to when you want to do them. Symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and coughing can be prevented completely or to some degree by using the correct asthma medication. There are generally two types of asthma medicine – controllers and relievers.

Asthma inhalers are a lifesaver to asthma sufferers. Asthma inhalers provides a safety net for people with asthma and is used whenever an asthma attack is imminent. When an asthma person suffers an asthma attack, the muscles in the bronchial tubes becomes constricted and thus makes it difficult for the person to breathe. An asthma inhaler helps to relax the muscles enabling the person to breathe normally. Doctors also recommend asthma sufferers to use inhalers before going to bed at night and also when they wake up in the morning.

One asthma treatment strategy involves anti-inflammatories which prevent blood vessels from leaking fluid into the airway tissues. Through the reduction in inflammation, this asthma treatment method reduces the likelihood of spasms of the airway muscle.

While asthma cannot be cured, it can be managed through appropriate asthma treatment. One of the first steps in asthma treatment involves changing an asthmatic’s environment. This type of asthma treatment can be as simple as washing bedding each week in hot water, or eliminating pets from the home.

Asthma attacks vary from person to person, but severe asthma attack is life threatening. The airways may close due to too much swelling and mucus production; in this case your body vital organs will not receive enough oxygen and this may cause death. You have to know how to treat your asthma before it could get serious.

Managing and knowing how to treat your asthma is a vital part of your life if you are an asthmatic. You cannot afford to ignore your asthma if you want to lead an asthma attack free life. You have to take all the cautions and the stay away from things that will trigger an asthma attack.

Asthma is possible the most common long-term disease suffered by children.

Just because your child may occasionally wheeze and cough, does not mean that your child has asthma. If you suspect your child has asthma the first priority is to obtain a correct diagnosis. However, be aware that symptoms can vary from episode to episode. One must consider the health of the child over the longer term. Often a virus or bacterial infection can produce an infection of the airways with Asthma-like symptoms.

Whatever the cause of the problem, if your child is experiencing breathing difficulties it is best to get them to a doctor without undue delay.

About eighty per cent of children who develop asthma do so before the age of five.

Children living in rural areas have lower rates of asthma than those who live in cities, particularly if they have spent their first five years in a rural area. For children living in inner cities the cockroach allergen seems to worsen asthma symptoms more than dust mite or pet allergens. Cockroach allergens have been found to be highest in high-rise apartments.

An important step in the control of your child’s asthma is to ensure that good housekeeping, cleaning and maintenance routines are followed in the home to ensure cockroaches are not encouraged.

Another factor that has been linked to the development of asthma in children is exposure to smoke. A study in Norway showed that almost ten per cent of adult asthma patients had experienced passive smoking during early childhood.

Therefore another step to take at home is to ensure that your child is not exposed to tobacco smoke.

If your doctor recommends the use of medication the next step is to encourage your child to take the medicine. Asthma is one of the main causes for emergency room visits by children.

Yet studies have shown that up to half of these hospitalizations may be preventable if children, particularly teenagers, followed their medication schedule correctly, avoided their asthma triggers and made regular visits to the doctor.

Perhaps the fear of side effects or dependency, or an impression that it is uncool to be seen taking medicines is preventing children taking their medication as regularly as they should. Perhaps intermittent asthma symptoms persuade children and their parents that it is not important to take medication if there are no symptoms. This is a mistake. Even when there are no obvious symptoms an asthmatic’s lungs will be inflamed to some degree.

The fact that the condition seems to run in families with a history of asthma or allergies suggests that certain people are born with a predisposition to asthma. Some may believe you are born with the condition and there is nothing you can do.

However a child’s environment can also play an important role. Studies have found that exposure to potential allergens like pets and pollen in the first six months of life may reduce the chance of developing asthma later. However exposure beyond six months of age has the opposite effect. Being born into a family that already has siblings also seems to reduce the chance of developing asthma.

It is known that children are more susceptible to viral and allergic triggers than adults. An important step in controlling your child’s asthma is identifying the triggers and teaching your child how to recognize their asthma triggers and avoid them.

One possible trigger is ibuprofen, with over 100,000 children susceptible to asthma symptoms brought on by the drug.

Children tend to spend more time outside during the summer vacation. If pollen or high levels of ozone trigger your child’s asthma you need to monitor these. Physical exercise is a common trigger of childhood asthma. Teach your child to take medication if necessary, and do warm up exercises before strenuous activity and wind down exercises after.

If your child is going away to camp during the vacation make sure those in charge are aware of your child’s asthma management and action plans. There are camps designed specifically for asthma sufferers in the U.S. and Canada. It is essential to have a written action plan that clearly states what medication to take and when, as well as how to respond to an asthma attack. You or your child may not remember what to do at a time when it may be difficult for them to breathe, so it is essential to have the important details in writing.

It is important you and your child remain calm during an attack as panic can produce more breathing difficulties. A parent’s instinct may be to cuddle their child, but that may constrict the chest further.

If asthma is diagnosed your next step is to inform your child’s school. Every school should allow access to asthma medication and some allow children to carry and self-administer their asthma medication if certain requirements are met.

Whilst we’re talking about schools here’s one often overlooked childhood asthma trigger. School buses are major sources of pollution, and studies show children who ride them are exposed to five to fifteen times as much asthma triggering particulates inside the buses compared to outside. New Jersey recently passed a law requiring retrofitting of school buses and municipal vehicles to clean up tailpipe emissions. Is your State doing the same?

Remember, if asthma is confirmed you need to educate yourself. According to the experts knowledge is the best prescription.

To stop the disease affecting your child’s life you need to know how to monitor and manage asthma. This will mean knowing how to use medications correctly, whether your child’s attacks are triggered by allergens and if so how to reduce exposure to them, and the lifestyle changes that will help your child prevent attacks.

Despite being a widespread disease there are still plenty of myths about asthma. One of the most damaging of these for children is the belief that the condition will improve every seven years or can even disappear completely. Unfortunately, any apparent improvement is probably due to hormonal changes as the child’s immune system matures. The underlying condition does not go away and not managing it properly can lead to long-term lung damage.
