Asthma History: Asthma Fighting Methods and Asthma History

Article by Sarah Braun

Asthma is a chronic condition where symptoms like wheezing and coughing can flare up,, this is considered an asthma attack when it results in difficulty taking in oxygen, though milder symptoms may be experienced.Inflammation of the bronchial tubes results in the classic asthma symptoms of coughing, wheezing, shortness of breathe, and a tightness of the chest. The most common type of asthma is allergic asthma; other forms include nocturnal asthma, exercise-induced asthma and occupational asthma.

Asthma history is a long and peculiar history. Since it threatens such a vital bodily function, but does not have an exact way for doctors to provide a clear diagnosis, a lot of mystery and confusion surrounds this ailment. Both the ancient Egyptians and Greeks had written records of asthma like symptoms; this is where our asthma history knowledge started.

Considering all of the time we had Asthma history knowledge, some of the thoughts from the last century are truly outrageous. In the early 1900′s, specially designed cigarettes were produced just for people with asthma. During the 1930′s, 40′s and 50′s, asthma was viewed a sickness of the brain that could be handled by talking to a therapist.

With asthma history behind us, asthma is now a widespread condition among the human population of our planet, but is far more prevalent in . . . → Read More: Asthma History: Asthma Fighting Methods and Asthma History

Asthma causes, Symptoms and treatments of Asthma

What Is Asthma?

Asthma (Az-muh) is a chronic disease that affects your airways. The airways are the tubes that carry air in and out of your lungs. If you have asthma, the inside walls of your airways are inflamed (swollen). The inflammation (IN-fla-MAY-shun) makes the airways very sensitive, and they tend to react strongly to things that you are allergic to or find irritating. When the airways react, they get narrower, and less air flows through to your lung tissue.

Like any other chronic disease, asthma is a condition you live with every day of your life. You can have an attack any time you are exposed to one of your triggers. Unlike other chronic obstructive lung diseases, asthma is reversible.

What Causes Asthma? It is not clear exactly what makes the airways of people with asthma inflamed in the first place. Your inflamed airways may be due to a combination of things. We know that if other people in your family have asthma, you are more likely to develop it.

Metabisulfite – a food preservative found in dried fruits, fruit juices, beer, wine, salad bars and vegetables.

Respiratory infections, such as colds, flu, sore throat and bronchitis.

Exposure to a variety of occupational irritants (e.g., vapors, dust, gases, fumes, tobacco smoke, air pollution) also can worsen or cause asthma.

What Causes Asthma And What Treatment Measures Are Available?

What Causes Asthma And What Treatment Measures Are Available?

The exact cause of asthma isn’t known. Researchers think a combination of factors (family genes and certain environmental exposures) interact to cause asthma to develop, most often early in life. These factors include:

An inherited tendency to develop allergies, called atopy (AT-o-pe) Parents who have asthma Certain respiratory infections during childhood Contact with some airborne allergens or exposure to some viral infections in infancy or in early childhood when the immune system is developing

If asthma or atopy runs in your family, exposure to airborne allergens (for example, house dust mites, cockroaches, and possibly cat or dog dander) and irritants (for example, tobacco smoke) may make your airways more reactive to substances in the air you breathe.

Different factors may be more likely to cause asthma in some people than in others. Researchers continue to explore what causes asthma.

The “Hygiene Hypothesis”One theory researchers have for what causes asthma is the “hygiene hypothesis.” They believe that our Western lifestyle–with its emphasis on hygiene and sanitation–has resulted in changes in our living conditions and an overall decline in infections in early childhood.

Many young children no longer experience the same types of environmental exposures and infections as children did in the past. This affects the way that the immune systems in today’s . . . → Read More: What Causes Asthma And What Treatment Measures Are Available?

Question by missitalia: I had an asthma attack at swim practice and I’m afraid to go back. Should I go or wait until I start meds?
I just found out that I had asthma, and this was my first swim practice for the season. I haven’t started medication yet (but will when my prescription comes in) should i swim with non-medicated asthma?

Best answer:

Answer by Evan M.You can swim but don’t push yourself too far or hard bc u will have an asthma attack and without a rescue inhaler it could end bad. I’m sure someone on ur team has an inhaler so u may ask around and see if u could borrow one if u have an attack.
