Summary:Many of us experience pain in the lower back without knowing its cause. Back pain can sometimes be tolerable or it may be unbearably painful to the point of interfering with our daily functions. Treatment varies depending on the severity of the condition. But the good news is, back pain rarely will result to paralysis.

A common problem with many adults is back pain. Many of us that experience back pain is caused by our daily routines such as when we spend too much time sitting while at work, or when we drive for a long period of time. Lifting heavy furniture while cleaning up at home, working in the garden, or lifting weights in the gym can also cause back pain. These activities can sometimes put so much pressure and weight on your back causing low back injuries such as muscle strain or spasm, sprain of ligaments, joint problems, or slipped disk. When we have back pain, it affects our daily functions. The feeling of pain can be from slightly tolerable to unbearably painful. Knowing what caused your back pain is something you need to discuss with your doctor.

Slipped Disk or Herniated Disk

When a disk between the bones of the spine swells or bulges and starts pressing on nerves, a slipped disk or herniated disk occurs. This is often caused by twisting while lifting. When you have a slipped disk, you may experience difficulty in doing regular tasks or activities like sitting and bending. When the injury is severe, you will have the tendency to avoid movement due to intense pain. A lot of people don’t realize what caused their slipped disk but it is worthy to know that the injury will not lead to paralysis, and treatment is readily available.

Natural Pain Relief

Treatment options for Herniated disk or Slipped disk can fall into Non-surgical or Surgical methods. Both treatments have risk and benefit factors. It is important that you discuss it with your doctor. However, most back pain can be relieved by a few simple methods that doctors would suggest to try non-surgical means first to reduce irritation of the nerve. Natural pain relief such as enough bed rest, proper posture when sitting, walking, and lying, as well as regular exercise can do the tricks.

When sleeping, the best position is to sleep on your side with your knees bent. A pillow under your head is recommended to support your neck and may use a pillow in between your knees. You can also lie on your back on a firm mattress with pillows under your knees. Or you can lie on the floor with your hips and knees bent and your feet on a chair. This takes the pressure and weight off your back. You may only need about two days of this sort of rest for a hurt back. Too much bed rest can cause your muscles to weaken and slows down your recovery. Try to walk around, even when it sometimes hurt, for a few minutes every hour. Such regular movement can help maintain muscle tone but limit activities such as prolonged sitting, lifting, and bending which can aggravate the symptoms.

Proper sitting position can help provide back pain relief. Choose chairs with straight backs or low-back support. See to it that you keep your knees a little higher than your hips. Make adjustments with your seat or use a low stool to prop your feet on. When you turn, move your whole body rather than by just twisting at your waist.

Another way can give you a back pain would be driving in your car everyday. Driving for long hours can strain your back. Try to sit straight by moving the seat forward to keep you from leaning forward when you reach for the controls. It may help to use a small pillow or rolled towel behind your lower back if you must drive or sit for a long time.

People whose work requires them to stand for a long period of time must find a way to rest one foot on a low stool from time to time, and try to switch with the other foot every 5 to 15 minutes. Maintaining a good posture is necessary in order to avoid back pain. Always try to keep your ears, shoulders, and hips in a straight line with your head up and your stomach pulled in.

To relax painful muscle spasms, try using heating pads for 20 to 30 minutes at a time. Likewise, ice packs and massages may also give the same back pain relief benefits.

Pain Medication

Muscle relaxant medications and anti-inflammatory drugs may be used to relieve pain and discomfort until the body heals itself. However, some non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as naproxen sodium, may increase your risk of heart attack and stroke. Always consult with your doctor any medication to determine whether the potential benefits outweigh the risks for you.

Surgical Method

When nonsurgical therapy does not ease your discomfort or the pain is getting worse and becoming unbearable, your doctor may recommend surgical procedure as option. There are various surgeries available that range from the minimally invasive methods to a more serious procedure such as spinal fusion. The complexity of the surgery will depend on the severity of your condition.

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation program may vary depending on the procedure the patient went through and the doctor’s preference. Exercise regimen may include:

* Exercises to strengthen your lower back and abdominal muscles* Exercises to improve your posture* Stretches to increase the flexibility of your spine and legs* Exercises to maintain your cardiovascular conditioning while you recover

Prolonged bed rest is not advised as it can lead to a decrease in your overall physical condition. Get up and move with caution following your doctor’s recommendations regarding specific activities you should participate in.

Indeed, back pain relief and the alleviation of other body aches is not impossible. Various drugs and therapies are now available to people who need to reclaim their health and resume their normal lives — free from pain and discomfort.

If you believe that you don’t have the time to participate in a physical therapy program, perhaps these benefits will change your mind.

1. Understanding Proper body Mechanics An understanding of proper body mechanics can reduce your need for medication and keep your spine healthy. An individualized physical therapy program can be helpful.

Physical therapists help patients to learn how to take care of their back and how to manage recurrent episodes of pain, thereby reducing the need for medications.

Body mechanics describes the way we move as we perform our daily activities. It focuses on how we sit, stand, bend, lift, and even how we sleep. Poor body mechanics can be the cause of back problems. When we don’t move correctly, the spine is subjected to abnormal stresses that can lead to degeneration of spinal structures like discs and joints, and can result in unnecessary wear and tear over time.

It is very important to understand proper body mechanics in order to keep your spine healthy.

2. Providing postural recommendations

In my extensive experience treating patients with back pain, I have seen time and time again the importance of postural recommendations in relieving their pain. Good posture is key in the prevention and control of back pain, and who is better suited to teach patients about postural recommendations than the physical therapist?

While often overlooked, a good understanding of proper sitting and standing postures can greatly eliminate back pain.

People often associate back pain with lifting, but poor posture is also a culprit.

Although improper lifting can result in back pain, correcting your posture is key. The deleterious effects of improper sitting can result in significant pain.

It’s easy to develop bad habits. However, good body mechanics are based on good posture.

Being aware of your posture during all of your daily activities is the best way to ensure you are using good body mechanics. Education on proper posture and body mechanics are an essential part in reducing and preventing back pain and thereby helping to avoid surgery.

3. Teaching Specific Exercises

As your back pain improves, your physical therapist can teach you specific exercises to increase flexibility, strengthen the back and abdominal muscles, and to improve your posture.

Stretching increases flexibility and increased flexibility helps you comfortably and fluidly perform activities of daily living. This will also help reduce the risk of muscle, joint and tendon injuries. Stretching can also often alleviate low back pain.

Muscle tightness in the quadriceps, hamstrings, hip flexors and low back muscles is a common cause of low back pain. Stretching these muscles will often eliminate the pain.

In physical therapy, strengthening the muscles of the abdomen, back and legs helps to reduce the symptoms of nerve compression.

4. Enhancing Weight Control

As you gain strength in your lower extremities, abdominal and back muscles, your endurance will improve. This will give you more energy and can enhance weight control, and often weight loss when accompanied with monitoring your caloric intake.

As your body tones and your stamina increases; you will improve your exercise tolerance and lose some body fat. Studies have shown that back pain decreases when you are at your ideal body weight. 5. Providing Manual Therapy Techniques

Physical therapists use a wide variety of manual techniques to help restore normal alignment and joint movement. A well-trained manual physical therapist can mobilize joints in a manner that a patient cannot do his or herself. They teach patients how to maintain good alignment once it is properly restored.

Physical therapy provides several benefits in the treatment of back pain. One of the benefits of exercise can be the reduction of back pain.

By adhering to your postural recommendations maintaining good body mechanics and performing your home exercise program, you can control your pain better.

Regular use of these techniques can help prevent pain from recurring, correct current back problems, help prevent new ones, and relieve back pain, particularly after an injury.

Proper exercise strengthens back muscles that support the spine and strengthens the abdomen, arms, and legs, reducing strain on the back. Exercise also strengthens bones and reduces the risk of falls and injuries. There are many different causes of back pain. Therefore, it is important that your physical therapy program be individualized to meet your specific needs.

An individualized physical therapy program where your physician works closely with your physical therapist can be beneficial to you in helping to control your back pain.

For lasting benefits, it is important to continue to perform your home exercise program once the physical therapy program has been discontinued.Working with your physician and physical therapist can help to reduce your back pain.

There are a lot of varieties when it comes to the relief from back pain. It is depending on its severity and duration of pain that the relief can be given. Our response for back pain usually has something to do with self medication of unprescribed drugs and application of ice pack or hot bottled water. Medication’s risk can happen especially when there is over dose or under dose of medications. The risk of hot and cold compress happens when the duration of application exceeds, and so a negative effect to body’s normal process can occur. The importance of health care practitioner must be considered.

Your health care provider will help you get through the pain of your back and will give you right advices on how to take care of our backs and prevent such occurrence. They know much more than you so follow doctor’s advice. Out of different factors back pain is felt, the very first thing to do is either to take a rest or withdraw self from straining activities for the mean time. You cannot continue activities that aggravate the pain. This approach is very understandable and may even be recommended only for a short term for more than a day or two because healing can be weaken when rest is the only remedy to do. As such, an advanced form of treatment should be applied for effective relief of back pain and to alleviate pain. The different treatments may be on exercises, medication and back supports for daily use.

PHARMACOLOGICAL TREATMENT

The most common medications for back pain are the over the counter pain killers and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These are highly recommended to alleviate back pain. They both work differently so they usually are taken at the same time. More so, the known prescribed drugs for back pain are muscle relaxants and anti-depressants that are good for prolong relief of pain.

Anti-pain:Acetaminophen (Tylenol) – This is the single most effective non prescription drugs for lower back pain and it has fewer side effects. Its action is to shut off the brain’s pain perception to alleviate pain.

NSAIDs: Aspirin – With this drug, swelling is reduced. However, adverse effects of aspirin makes it less advised, so it is much better to take other NSAIDs such as naproxen and ibuprofen.

Prescribed Steroids: The drug is very particular in reducing swelling, but because of its adverse effects into the body, the drug should be given on time and the dose should be measured in exact.

To ensure safety, before taking the drugs, ask first form your doctor the dose, frequency and duration of the drugs.

BACK PAIN EXERCISES

When done in a controlled, gradual, and progressive manner, these exercises are effective in restoring the spine and alleviating the pain. These can also distribute nutrients into the spine and soft tissues in the back to keep the spine, muscles, ligaments and joints healthy. A relief from back pain through a regular routine of lower back exercises helps patients avoid stiffness and weakness, thus minimizing recurrences of lower back pain.

It is best to consult first with your physical therapist as to the right way of doing the exercises and as to the type of exercises you may perform.

When you will do the exercises, it is necessary that you will know the muscles used.

Hamstrings – located in the back of the legs to aid correct posture while sitting and standing, and support the muscles in the buttocks.

Piriformis – This is found on the back of the thigh bone and to the base of the spine for support.

Gluteus muscles of the buttocks – This is particular on supporting hip movement and flexibility.

LET’S WORK OUT!

The back exercises do not specifically focus only on the back, it also involves the neck, back, buttocks and hips for proper joint movement.

NECK EXERCISES

Chin to Chest

Whether you are standing or sitting, gently bend the head forward while bringing the chin toward the chest until a stretch is felt in the back of neck.

Ear to Shoulder

Choose whether you are comfortable sitting or standing; slowly and gently bend neck to one side as if your ear reaching out to your shoulder. Do it also on the other side.

BACK EXERCISES

These stretching back exercises can help bring back some flexibility and increase mobility, thus decreasing back pain and discomfort.

Back flexion

While lying on your back, pull both knees to the chest while flexing the head forward until a comfortable stretch is felt in a fetal position.

Knee to Chest

As you lie on your back, knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Place your hands behind the knee and then gently bring it to the chest.

EXERCISES FOR THE HIPS AND GLUTEUS

Spine flexibility is attained when the muscles for the hips and buttocks are stretched.

Hip exercise

Stand with feet apart, then take minimum step back using your right foot and then bend left knee. Assuming still in such position, bend forward more and then reach out your light leg as much as possible.

Piriformis muscle stretch

When you lie on your back, cross the leg over the other and then gently pull one knee to the chest for a good stretch on the buttocks area.

RELIEVING BACK SUPPORT

There are a lot of ergonomic back supports made to provide relief from back pain while working and driving. Generally, the purpose of such support include:

- They allow to correct posture for the spine. – They lessen painful posture related positions as they also provide support in the head, neck, upper and lower backs.

How to relieve lower back pain is centered on exercises, medications, ways of blocking nerve conduction to the brain to alleviate pain and of course surgery.

Low back pain is very common among adults and it is often caused by overused of muscles causing strain or injury. Long hours of sitting and standing can also aggravate the condition. If lower back muscles are injured because of some circumstances, lower back pain will be compromised and will be strained to in many ways.As such, when people have such condition, they feel as if they want that pain to disappear in a second.

There have been known treatment approaches for relieving lower back pain because its severity differ from person to person. So here are some things to remember when you will be faced with some treatment options for your lower back pain.

- When you submit your self to treatment, it will help you be active as much as you can and you will realize in the long run that when you have repeated back pains, it will never be surprising and dangerous at all. The more you choose to be active, the lesser the chance that you will have low back pain, and for complete avoidance, you also need to limit your activities for the day, and position self properly when sitting or standing. Doctor’s advice is recommended for some health teachings.- As the pain is no longer severe and it can be tolerated, back, neck, legs and other areas of the body can be strengthened through exercises and stretches. Your exercises do not just relieve back pain, it can also pave its way in helping you for faster recovery, preventing further recurrence and reducing the risk of permanent disability.- Your exercises for low back pain do not need to be complex at all, it can actually be done at the comforts of your own home.- Don’t let fear of pain keep you from trying gentle activity. You should keep yourself active especially when pain can be tolerated to prevent recurrence of severity and to prevent further disability. Remember, with lesser activity, flexibility, endurance and strength will also lessen, thereby causing more pain on your back.

SIGNIFICANT STEPS ON HOW TO RELIEVE LOWER BACK PAIN

1. Effective lower back pain stretching exercises

Relief of back pain on its early stage can be possible with exercises and stretches often required by your health care provider. What more can be effective when 2 exercises (lower back strengthening + cardio session) are combined as these can put a great success in relieving pain on the area. These will enable your body to become stronger and increase movement and flexibility.

With exercise, blood flow will increase and continuously nourish the muscles to provide great flexibility and most of all, allows the release of natural pain killers of the body. Aim for 20 to 30 minutes of these exercises each day and you’ll notice a significant difference in not only your lower back, but you’ll feel better overall.

Aerobic exercise – Once you do this exercise, it can help promote good circulation of the body, improves breathing and keep the overall health of the body balanced.

*Tread milling, swimming, riding on a stationary bike, brisk walking, jogging, aerobics.

Strengthening exercises – This kind of exercise focuses working out on the back, stomach and leg muscles.

*Prone hold, chest lift, opposite arm leg raises, roll outs, super man.

Stretching exercises -Stretching exercise is done to prevent body pains after the exercise.

If lower back pain is still felt, avoid the following:

X Straight leg sit-ups.

X Lifting legs while lying flat on back.

X Heavy lifting

2. Application of hot and cold therapy

On the early part of lower back pain, hot and cold compress can be applied alternately. At some time, relief of pain can be effectively done more by cold compress than heat, or vice versa. So just know what you feel is more effective and relieving for you.Use ice pack for pain and inflammation for 10-15 minutes. After the cold, do heat application for healing and must not be more than 15 minutes.

3. Medications

Of all the drugs for low back pain, NSAIDs and pain-killers are the most common to be ordered. Since the drugs have different functions, they can be taken together provided that they don’t cause drug to drug interactions. However, prescribed medications such as the muscle relaxants and anti-depressants can be used for long relief of pain.

Pain killer – Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is one pain killer that is known to treat lower back pain effectively because of its lesser side effects. It relieves pain by working its action into the brain to turn off the pain perception. NSAIDs – It can effectively reduce swelling on the area. However, this drug is not really advised because of its life threatening effects. Steroids – are effective in treating swelling; however, these drugs have a lot of adverse effects so the dose should be exact and be given regularly and on time.

To ensure safety of the intake of drug, consult your doctor for the right dose, frequency and duration of the drug.

4. Transcutaneous electrical nerve simulation Pain-free relief can be felt using this treatment. This treatment is a batter operated device that send pulses into the nerve fibers to stop or hinder pain signals from going to the brain.

5. Ultrasound This is a non-surgical way of warming the internal tissues of the body thereby causing relaxation of the back muscles.

6. Surgical therapy is one of the many methods on how to relieve lower back pain but it is the least thing to do when the patient does not respond to therapies.Surgery is the next option only when the case is unresponsive to the above mentioned treatment and it also dependable to the doctor’s insight on the case and also the patient’s willingness to submit to it.

Statistics on back pain

Treatment for back pains

A muscle relaxant as diazepam, prescribed by a doctor, will cause drowsiness and gives you time to relax completely. Chronic back aches are also relieved by pain-killers as paracetamol, NSAD and codeine. This type can be relieved by over the counter (OTC) painkillers as paracetamol and if a stronger one is needed, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAD) as ibuprofen or one that requires a prescription a mild opiate as codeine taken with paracetamol or NSAD. Another is amitriplyline which needs a doctor’s prescription. The types of surgery commonly performed are – discectomy which removes the herniated disc that pressurized the nerves, the fusion surgery which is due to vertebra slip and it has to be fused into place by using metal rods and injections at the back to relieve pain.

Causes of back pains

- Infection of the spine. If you are feverish, feel tender and warm and your back aches, the cause is infection. – These are rare and serious conditions related to back pains. – Lumbar muscle strained is the most common cause but the pain disappears after a few weeks. Strains are stressed directed to the muscles and ligaments due to carrying heavy objects improperly or sudden uncoordinated movements. When muscle spasms occur, back pain ensues. – Sciatica. As the swelling herniated disk thronged on the main nerve which descends upon your legs, you will experience shooting pains in your buttocks and lack of the legs. – Skeletal irregularities. When the spine curves in an irregular manner, it arches excessively a condition called scoliosis. This abnormal condition leads to dorsalquia.

Types of back pains

Sometimes, your legs and back will feel numbness. When you feel pain every time you cough or bend from the waist, you have herniated disk. And when you are under the age of 50 and you feel a dull ache on one area of your spine when lying or getting out of bed, you are suffering from osteoarthritis. When ache in the back goes down to the legs, this is a sign of sciatica. It can be a burning or stinging pain or felt like a thousand needles pricking your legs.

Complementary and alternative treatment

- Biofeedback. Electrodes and other sensors are applied to the body and the monitor will give feed backs as to the conditions of the muscles, tension, brain wave activity, respiration, heart rate, blood pressure and temperature. – Use of insoles. Insoles are the arch support in your shoes which provide underside support to the feet. Laboratory studies showed that the shoe insole can be a help in preventing and treating back pains. They absorb the shock of the foot as it touches the ground and support the foot in its proper alignment. – Transcutaneous electric nerve stimulus (TENS) TEN delivers electrical impulses in the body by means of electrodes placed on the skin. It works two ways:first, the low electric impulses can stimulate the body to produce endorphins, the natural body painkillers and second, the high electric impulses can block the pain signals starting from your back to the brain.

Risks factors

Back pains are caused by the debilitating conditions brought about by osteoporosis, vertebral fractures, osteoarthritis, degenerative spondylolishtesis, degenerative disk diseases, spinal stenosis, pinched nerves and adult scoliosis. In fact, back pains which are considered work-related disorders, will enable the employee the right to receive a disability pension. Aging has always been unfavorable to health due to its degenerative effects. Studies showed that non-smokers have less complain about back pains than smokers. If you are unhappy with your job, stressed, anxious and depressed, you are likely to suffer many kinds of ailment, one physical manifestation is the dorsalquia.

Tests and diagnostics

He will tap your knee with a wooden hammer to examine your reflexes. An assessment will be made as the source of the pain and your ability to move, your muscle spasms and probable cause of your back ache.

Prevention of back pains

In picking up objects from the floor, do not bend down, instead use your knees then lift the object from one side. If you are standing for long periods, have a small stool available where you can rest one foot from time to time. Use lumbar support belts in performing heavy lifting weights in the gym.

———————————————————–Sciatica Pain Learn how our expertsfind and treat the source of your pain.

Join me on a journey that is light years ahead.
Announcer: Pain: It attacks your body when you least expect it, stops you in your tracks, preys on your mind, robs you of happiness, spirit and freedom. Introducing light relief. An FDA-cleared, led infrared light therapy that increases circulation and is guaranteed to relieve your pain. Finally, there’s a fast, natural alternative to pain relief that gets you back to living well, spending time the way you really want, having fun and enjoying the people you love. Based on the same technology Nasa’s been studying for over 20 years to promote cell growth and healing in space, Newsweek magazine hails, light therapy “can boost the body’s own natural healing process.” CBS news in Los Angeles reports, “navy seals use light therapy in the field daily…” light relief uses medical grade light emitting diodes or LEDs to create a safe powerful stream of warm therapeutic healing light that penetrates deep, opening capillaries, increasing circulation, relieving pain where you need it, when you need it. Imagine pain relief without messy creams and gels, prescriptions, pills, injections or refills. And the only side effect is how good light relief makes you feel. It’s great for back pain, arthritis, tension headaches, bursitis, tennis elbow, hip and joint pain, muscle strains and spasms, stiffness and tendonitis. It can even help relieve stubborn chronic pain. Just imagine what it can do for everyday aches and pains. Its innovative compact design is durable, lightweight and portable. It goes anywhere, fits the palm of your hand for temporary relief of pain. Easily remove the comfort pad. It’s flexible to fit every curve of your body. Light relief is made to meet the highest quality standards and is backed by a free two-year warranty. That means that if it gets damaged, even if it’s your fault, send it back and we’ll rush you a new one free. If you or someone you love has pain, sit back, relax, stay tuned and discover the soothing power of light. Listen to orthopedic surgeons, doctors and physical therapists who have seen amazing results in their patients. Hear athletes from pro jockeys to PGA tour players, even sky divers that rely on the secret of light relief to stay at their peak. And meet some of the thousands of people that have experienced the miracle of living pain-free in as little as 5 minutes a day, with the natural, incredible therapeutic healing power of light relief.
Sunlight is the source of all life. It feels good but we all know it can have damaging effects. What if you could have the soothing benefits of natural light without any of the dangers? That’s exactly what you get with the therapeutic warm healing light of light relief. I use light relief and I love it. I play tennis, golf, I’m an active guy and I have no intention of slowing down. I have chronic back pain and tennis elbow that used to stop me. Light relief allows me to do what I love without pain. It’s now available to you. Listen to some of the hundreds of thousands of people who have found real relief with light relief.
It’s been about… 20 years since I’ve actually slept more than two hours a night. The less activity you can do and the more depressed you get because you can’t get up and move around and the more you eat, the more you sit. It is a cycle and it’s a cycle that I thought I was never gonna get out of. I don’t have pain anymore. I don’t have the numbness in my hands. You know, I can sleep, I can lay down, I can walk through an entire mall. Taking my granddaughter shopping, going to the beach with my kids, uh… My life today is light-years ahead of what it was a year ago. It’s incredible.
I’ve depended on my hands and arms for everything throughout my life and they’ve always been there for me– all the strength I need, all the endurance I need. As the arthritis is beginning to enter into my hands, I see changes in the shapes of the joints. Um, I have pain on a fairly regular basis. I find that if I grab things, that maybe the grip is not complete and I?ll drop a glass, or not be able to take a jar lid off. With light relief, I put the lights on the back of my hands, palms of my hands for 10, 15 minutes and the full flexibility is back, the range of motion is back, and the pain is gone. The jar lid that I had to go to the neighbor to open is opened by my own hands. It’s freedom.
I woke up one morning with a kink in my neck and didn’t go away– one day, two days. Just, you know, tough time moving my head from side to side and lots of stiffness in my right shoulder. I put the light relief right around my neck, right in my shoulder. Not only was the relief complete, but it was so immediate. Um, 15 to 20 minutes and a pain I’ve had for three days is gone? And the next thing I knew, I was packing up to go to a meeting and felt great. My arm was moving. My neck wasn’t stiff. And um… I was pretty amazed to be honest with you.
The FDA has approved this device and it’s… It is because, number one, it does work, it’s advocatious and has demonstrated itself to be a resourceful augmentation of healing. Number two: It’s a non-invasive type of treatment. Number three: The principles of light therapy are well established over the years. And number four: It has been shown to decrease the time and therefore is an effective device and it’s safe.
Nasa scientists have been documenting the healing properties of infrared light for years. Doctors and researchers from leading medical universities furthered this research by studying the effects of light on healing tissues, increasing circulation and relieving pain. Light relief is a powerful light therapy device. Its state-of-the-art design incorporates medical grade LEDs or light emitting diodes which produce infrared light and soothing heat to relieve pain. Its red and blue indicators let you know it’s emitting a special safe frequency of light that penetrates deep, elevating temperatures, increasing circulation and powerfully relaxing muscles to relieve pain. Light relief is completely safe and contains no dangerous UVs or lasers. So you can use it frequently for everything, for minor aches and pains to arthritis and even chronic pain. It’s easy to use because its ergonomic base forms to fit your hand, or just attach the comfort pad. It’s thin enough to lie on comfortably and flexible enough to ease pain right where you need it, when you need it.
Even though I’d been around and working with this technology for almost 20 years, there are still times where it surprises me. I’m… I use it on somebody and I?ll expect one outcome, and the outcome will be much better than what I expected when I started the treatment. The light relief device is as easy as shining the light on the area that needs treatment. Now at home, you have the same technology that chiropractors, physical therapists and doctors are utilizing within their practices.
Light relief provides a deep down soothing warmth that relieves pain like nothing else. That’s why pro athletes from every sport love it. Meet American horse racing legend, Corey Nakatani. At only 36, he’s won over 5 million in purses and has been in the winner’s circle everywhere from Santa Anita to Belmont. He’s broken enough records and bones to last a lifetime.
To be only 32 years old and competing at that level, you need to be healthy. You need to be physically sound, you know, to be pain free. The speeds of the horses, obviously going 40 miles an hour on the back of a horse with 10, 15 guys trying to jostle and get to the position they want to be in, your body takes a pounding. You have to be agile enough to be able to make a split decision in the blink of your eye. Mentally and physically, you have to be at the top of your game. When you get any type of injury, especially anything to do with your back, your hamstring or your groin, light relief gives you that opportunity to get the relief that you need. …It’s just a matter of, you know, 15 to 20 minutes a day with it and it relieves the pain and you’re able to compete at a top-notch level. So, light relief makes a big difference for me.
I’m a believer because I know what pain’s like. I know what agony’s like. I know what pain’s like. And I know what it does to a person. The minute I lay down at night, the pain started. And that’s what really scared me because I was at my wit’s end until I came across light relief. It’s been a miracle for me. I mean, absolute miracle. There’s light at the end of the tunnel and it’s light relief. Thank god.
The first research was done by Nasa, as well as some of the top scientists at Livermore Lab. And what they discovered was that red and infrared lights have an impact on living tissue. I’ve seen it do amazing things with a lot of different problems, injuries and so forth in my practice. Why not have something that’s gonna help you get better quicker?
I was to the point where I thought I was gonna have to get a scooter just to be able to get through the shop. I had a client give me a call and told me that he had a way of relieving some pain in my lower back, it was called light relief. He put the unit on me for two treatments, two 20-minute treatments and it’s the first time in probably 20 years that I could actually pick my knees up. I immediately went out to the back of the shop and I was marching around, which I’ve never been able to pick my feet up and I said, “let’s go dancing! I’m ready!”
I’m a former marine, um… Back in the ’70s. And, um, I’m a Vietnam veteran. I did sustain a gunshot wound that was very severe to my right knee. I was actually diagnosed at not even being able to walk at one time. And I’ve been suffering with a lot of pain through it, uh, for about 30 years now. My knee actually gave away. And this is one of the things that’s real critical for my job that I’m able to stand on my feet. Uh, I started using the light relief on my knee. It started immediately giving me relief within about three days. It is so natural. You don’t have to sit there and say, well, I gotta take a pill. It’s three hours or it’s four hours. My stomach’s upset. I’m nauseated, I’m sick. It’s very simple. It doesn’t have any of those side effects at all. You put the light on and it does amazing things for you.
Wouldn’t you love to take the youth of your 30s and extend it into your 40s, 50s or beyond? Now you can, with light relief. We sent our crew out to meet Ana Dolginer. She’s over 50, suffers from arthritis but still manages to keep flying high… With light relief.
One of the things about my arthritis is, it’s like a double-edged sword. I have to move and stay active for it to, uh… Not take control of me. But moving and staying active makes it ache. On one of my jumps, I broke my leg and I have a pin that goes two inches above the knee. And the arthritis seems to want to settle right there in that area. And skydiving, it affects my arthritis because I take a lot of jolts, a lot of bumps, a lot of bruises, especially on the landings. And light relief helps with all of that so that I can continue to skydive so that my joints will continue to be mobile. A lot of people, when they turn 50, they just kind of roll over and I’m 55 and I keep moving. My arthritis will not freeze me up and light relief helps me to do that. When I jump out of this airplane, I just get such a feeling of freedom that you would not believe. There is no comparison to this feeling. And I’m able to do that because of light relief. I’ll continue to move and move and move and stay active in my life. I’m having a great, great life. I just love the life I’m living.
The future of pain relief is here and it’s called light relief. It’s natural, it’s safe and it’s incredibly effective. The beauty is you buy it once and you have it right by your side to relieve pain where you need it when you need it. Once you have it, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it. He’s one of the top 10 riders in the world. He uses light relief daily to relieve his aches and pains. He’s even used it to deal with the residual pain from a broken wrist.
Motocross and Supercross racing is a challenging and brutal sport and you’re gonna encounter some injuries sometimes. A month and a half before the season started, I was going through my race simulation mode and I made a small mistake. I misjudged a jump and I came up a little bit short and a little bit sideways on a triple jump. And on impact, it broke my wrist pretty bad. I dropped my bike and I have a really good doctor that started therapy with the lights. The wrist is something that needs to be completely healthy in order to control a motorcycle that weighs over 200 pounds. Working with the lights, I was able to actually get back on the bike within four or five weeks after a really, really bad wrist injury that normally would take, you know, upwards of three to four months to completely rehab.
Orthopedic surgeon and former team doctor for the Minnesota Twins and Dallas North Stars, Dr. Don Miller, uses light relief daily with both professional athletes and his patients.
The FDA has approved the use of red and infrared light for two specific purposes: One is to diminish pain, and the second is to increase blood flow. When you’re first injured, you don’t want a lot of blood still being pumped into the area. So you’d like to slow the circulation down. However, once the injury is, say, 12 to 24 hours old, you want to increase the circulation so you can get all that fluid out of there. Because by increasing blood flow, you can promote the healing to occur much quicker. It’ll help get rid of all this fluid that’s accumulating and the swelling will go down. As swelling goes down, you’re gonna have relief of pain.
You know, many people are in pain for months after surgery. Light relief can help with the residual pain associated with the healing process. Just ask Betty Armour. She’s relied on light relief to ease the pain of reconstructive surgery.
In April 2001, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to have a right mastectomy. I elected to have a left mastectomy as well because I didn’t want a reoccurrence. It was a pretty lost feeling and a very difficult time for me emotionally. I did not even contemplate the physical pain I was about to endure. I wasn’t able to do a lot of the things that I needed to in just mere life in taking care of my household and my kids. And I was becoming severely depressed because I was in pain all the time. I started using light relief. And I couldn’t explain to you how it worked. I just marvel over the fact that it reduced my pain tremendously. Light relief has been very much a miracle to me and has offered me, you know, a lot of relief in various areas, not just the physical pain, but emotionally and mentally, too.
One of our patients, an Olympic athlete, a very gifted young lady, she’s had several injuries throughout her illustrious career. We immediately started treating her with light relief and within days she started feeling better. The radiologist called me up and he said, “Dr. Emerson, you’ve got to come and look at these MRIs because there’s a definite change and we’re seeing some recovery and some healthier hamstring tendon.” and sure enough, the MRIs were changing from that whitish appearance to a more gray and darker appearance, which is a more normal-appearing tendon. So we attribute that to increase vascularity and increase healing properties of the penetration of the light relief that we know can occur. But it did get her to the point where she could compete in that Olympic event and that was very exciting.
The pro athlete is a very, very tough individual. They do not complain about much at all and when they do come and see us in the training, we know that there are problems, whether they’re having difficulties– either they’ll be swelling or a pain level, they will want their injuries taken care of immediately. They want to be back playing as fast as possible. After using this product for three years now, I’m a firm believer in the light relief patch and I’m glad to incorporate it with our professional athletes on a daily regime in our treatment protocols.
Pain doesn’t sleep. It takes a toll on your mind, body and spirit. One of the best things about light relief is how its soothing warmth will help you relax and wind down at the end of the day. Just place the comfort pad on the lower neck between the shoulder blades. Within minutes, you’ll feel the warmth of its radiant light penetrate muscles as your body naturally releases tension and stress. Its power to increase circulation makes it a perfect way to relax right before bed and it feels wonderful.
I had an Achilles strain and I was limping around and it was really frustrating because I was walking on my toes. And I got my hands on the light relief and put it on there. It felt really soothing. I did it as much as I could and I realized, my foot doesn’t hurt anymore. I can’t believe it. This things works. I’m hooked!
Imagine your job meant walking six miles a day every day and then swinging a golf club upwards of 300 to 500 times. That’s a normal day for Billy Mayfair. As a top PGA pro with over million in earnings, he’s currently the only player to beat tiger woods in a play-off. He relies on light relief daily.
The thing that surprised me, probably the most about light relief, is how well it made me feel after my activities, after playing 18 holes of golf and walking six miles. Uh, to put it on my back, even for the 10 minutes in the car ride home, the few minutes back in the hotel room, as loose as I felt, no stiffness or no pain. It was really amazing. It’s always important to have some type of little edge over the competition that’s out there in the PGA tour. If you can get a product that makes your body feel better and it could help you over a long period of time, it still comes down to golf and making the putts and all that. But, if you can feel a little bit better than the other guy, you have a big advantage.
If you have pain and feel like you’ve tried it all, you haven’t. I know, because like all the people you’ve heard from today, I’ve had pain and light relief is the one thing I now reach for anytime I want to feel good again. The fact that you don’t need a prescription and it has no negative side effects make it a natural choice that hundreds of thousands of people have turned to for fast effective relief from aches and pains. Your relief is only a phone call away. You’ve got nothing to lose but your pain.
Announcer: Introducing light relief, your power over pain. And it don’t matter whether you’re walking or whether you’re riding a horse. Your knees get a lot of abuse. But I found out with using the lights that they make life so much better. And you don’t have the pain and you can do your work a lot better. I just swear by the lights, I can tell you this much. Just within a matter of minutes, I feel definitely the muscles and the tension releasing and then, I’m amazed that 15 minutes later, the pain’s gone. Before that, I used to have to take at least 8-10 ibuprofen a day, just to get out of bed and function. So it’s amazing to me to be pain free.
The simplest solutions are sometimes the best: Infrared light is a unique, safe alternative that’s accepted worldwide as a 21st century therapy for pain. Finally, this technology is affordable for everyone. Hundreds of thousands of satisfied light relief users agree, like me and the people you’ve heard from today, break the cycle of pain and get back to living. Your chance to get the soothing power of light relief is here. Call 1-800-983-5221 now. Get yours. Wishing you great health that’s light years ahead, I’m Robert Wagner. You’re gonna love it.
I don’t think that there’s anyone that shouldn’t have light relief.
Light relief is an amazing product.
I was amazed that the relief was so complete and so total.
There’s light at the end of the tunnel and it’s light relief. Thank god.

Some pain relievers are injected on the affected joint and are expected to alleviate pain faster than medications. Another addition to the treatment options for joint pains is joint pain supplements.

Joint Pain Treatments: Pros and Cons

To manage joint pains, people suffering from joint pains take oral medications. These medications are available over-the-counter but they should be taken only following the recommendation of a physician. Individuals must also regularly visit their physicians to monitor any side effects of the medications. Pain medications are associated with adverse side effects which makes it an unlikely treatment for joint pains.

Joint pain medications for joint pains are known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). NSAIDs have potential side effects hence doctors normally recommend one with the least side effects. Still, side effects are never eliminated. Moreover, one cannot use these drugs in conjunction with other medications. Individuals who are taking blood-thinning medications should not take joint pain medications since it can be extremely dangerous. In addition, these joint pain medications increases risk for cardiovascular diseases, kidney damage and liver damage.

Injections may be used if joint pain medications do not help. Injections are normally corticosteroids that are injected directly to the painful joints. This treatment has been proven effective especially in reliving pain caused osteoarthritis. However, regular injections with corticosteroids may cause damage on the cartilage. Injections cannot be used more than thrice a year to prevent side effects, but its effects may last up to few months. Still, the potential side effects with injections are enough reasons to avoid these treatments.

Avoiding Harmful Joint Pain Treatments

Since medications and injections cause adverse side effects, joint pain supplements are developed to replace these treatments. Joint pain supplements are composed of active ingredients that are effective in reducing pain thereby increasing the mobility of the joints. Joint pain supplements have no known adverse effects except for stomach upset during the first few days of intake. As the body adjusts with the treatment, the discomfort disappears. What makes joint pain supplements ideal is the fact that it does not just treat painful joints, it also help maintain the health of joints.

According to current research, there are certain muscles in the back that work to stabilize the spine. When the spine or the back suffers an injury, these muscles are reflexively inhibited or shutdown. Worse still, these muscles do not spontaneously recover, and this is true even if patients do not feel pain and are able to return to normal activity levels.

As a result of the inhibition of these muscles, called lumbar multifidi and the transversus abdominus, lower back pain occurs. However, there are steps you can take to prevent the same thing from happening to you.

Lower Back Pain and Physical Therapy

One way to prevent the inhibition of the lumbar multifidi and transversus abdominus is through a series of physical therapy exercises.

Designed to strengthen the muscles of the lower back and keep the spine healthy, these physical therapy exercises may range from back stabilization exercises to muscle strength development and several wide variety of techniques.

In addition, a physical therapist may also recommend such methods as heat therapy, ultrasound, massage, mobilization, and education about posture and body mechanics in order to prevent lower back pain from recurring.

Some of these methods will be discussed later on. You will also find some practical self-help tips provided by experts to help you avoid lower back pain or prevent the condition from worsening.

However, before we head on to learning how lower back pain is treated through physical therapy, it is important that we first understand what causes lower back pain.

Lower Back Pain: CAUSES

There are actually many types of back pain, but the most common is pain in the lower back. Why? You might ask. The reason is simple: you carry most of your weight in the lower back. Thus, it is highly likely that a person would suffer pain in that area.

There is no definitive cause of lower back pain. Sometimes, the causes of the condition are so complex that it is difficult to pinpoint just a single one.

However, physical therapists and other healthcare professionals have observed that lower back pain is often a result of strained back muscles and ligaments due to any of the following activities:

Improper posture

Heavy lifting

Sudden awkward movement

Muscle spasm

Stress

We could all be guilty of the above activities. We may not suffer any back pains now, but it is likely that as we get older and the degree of inhibition of the back muscles as a result of these activities increases, back pain becomes a very distinct possibility.

In addition to these common activities, lower back pain may also result from specific conditions, such as:

Herniated disk (when the disk material presses on a nerve)

Sciatica (when a herniated disk presses on the sciatic nerve. The condition causes sharp, shooting pain through the buttocks and the back of the leg.)

Spinal stenosis (when the space around the spinal cord and nerve roots becomes narrow. This is caused by arthritis and bone overgrowth, the pain resulting from when a nerve gets pinched in the narrow space.)

Spondylosis (a type of arthritis affecting the spine due to degenerative changes brought on by aging)

Spondylolisthesis (when one vertebra in the spinal column slips forward over another)

Lower Back Pain: TREATMENT

The treatment of lower back pain depends on several factors, including the specific type of lower back pain (whether it is chronic or acute) and the purported cause.

For instance, acute lower back pain is commonly treated with pain relieving drugs, such as analgesics, or some forms of exercises that can help relax the muscles.

On the other hand, chronic back pain or one that lasts for more than two weeks and is progressive may be caused by some underlying condition, during which case the treatment plan may consist of resolving the underlying condition to treat the back pain.

Lower Back Pain and Physical Therapy Exercise

Physical therapy exercise is one of the most common methods of treating lower back pain. In fact, many home remedies for lower back pain consist of exercise, because the general theory is that if you remain active, you remain healthy. This is true in most cases.

However, for purposes of this article, the exercises featured here will be those that are practiced by physical therapists to treat patients with lower back pain.

Generally, in physical therapy exercises, the exercise program for back pain should encompass a set of stretching exercises, strengthening exercises, and low impact aerobics. Read below for more on these exercises:

-Stretching

The back of a person is composed of the spinal column and contiguous muscles, ligaments and tendons. All these are designed to move in consonance with each other so that any limitation in the range of motion in any of these components of the back result in back pain.

Stretching for lower back pain specifically targets soft tissues, such as muscles, ligaments and tendons, found in the back and around the spine. By stretching, the spine and soft tissues are mobilized, increasing motion and thus, relieving pain.

There are many kinds of stretching exercises employed by physical therapists. One is the Hamstring Stretching Exercise which works to relax tight hamstrings, a common symptom of lower back pain. This exercise is said to help decrease the intensity of lower back pain among sufferers.

-Strengthening

Physical therapists generally use two forms of strengthening and back pain relief exercises, usually depending on the specific condition of the patient. These are the McKenzie exercises and dynamic lumbar stabilization exercises. However, the two forms of strengthening exercises may also be combined should the therapist find it appropriate to do so.

-McKenzie Exercises

Named after a physical therapist in New Zealand, McKenzie exercises are primarily extension exercises that could help reduce pain generated from the disc space and also may help reduce the symptoms of herniated disc by reducing pressure on a nerve root.

For acute pain, the McKenzie exercises should be done frequently, at least once every two hours. In addition, patients are advised to avoid flexing their spine when exercising.

-Dynamic Lumbar Stabilization Exercises

Using this back exercise technique, the first thing that a physical therapist does is to look for the patient’s “neutral” spine. This refers to the position that allows the patient to feel the most comfortable.

Afterwards, when the patient is in that position, the back muscles are then exercised in order to “teach” the spine how to stay in this position.

Performing these exercises on a regular basis can help strengthen the back muscles and keep the spine well-positioned.

Low Impact Aerobic Exercises

The purpose of low impact aerobic exercise is to recondition the back. Patients who undergo reconditioning of the back through low impact aerobic exercise will have fewer episodes of lower back pain.

In addition, whenever an episode of lower back pain does occur, the pain is less intense and lasts only for a short period.

Another benefit of low impact aerobic exercise is that patients tend to stay functional that is, they can continue with their regular work and carry on with recreational activities. In contrast, patients who do not undergo low impact aerobic exercises typically experience the gradual loss of their functional abilities.

For low impact aerobic exercises to achieve their desired results, they should be continuous. This will increase the heart rate and keep it elevated as well as increase the production of endorphins, which are pain fighting hormones released by the body.

Here are some examples of low impact aerobic exercises that you may want to try in order to lessen or reduce lower back pain:

-Walking

One of the simplest forms of aerobic exercises, walking is generally considered as very gentle on the back. To get the maximum benefit from walking as a form of low impact aerobic exercise, walk two to three miles three times per week.

-Stationary Bicycling

This form of aerobic exercise is less painful on the back since there is lower impact produced. This is beneficial for patients with lower back pain who may find walking too painful.

-Water Therapy

Sometimes referred to as aquatherapy, water therapy is simply doing exercise in the water. The buoyancy works to provide effective conditioning at the same time stress on the back is reduced.
