Question by pizzaman: What is the difference between Costochondritis and Crohn’s Disease?
I have two friends: one who’s 31 named Katie, and one who’s 20 named Natasha. They were both experiencing the same pain in their sternum. Katie’s doctor told her it was costochondritis and one told her it was Crohn’s Disease. Are they both the same? Is there a cure?

Best answer:

Answer by Pixie ChickCostochondritis is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects the breast bone to the ribs. It is acute, short lived, goes away within a week or two. Anti-inflammatories like Advil can help. Crohn’s Disease is chronic with flare ups intermittently and is associated with the small bowel which becomes inflammed. Symptoms do not include chest pain. Symptoms are mid to lower abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. These two diagnosis are very different. Google for more information. There is no cure for Crohn’s Disease just palliative treatment, sometimes with severe Crohns, surgery is necessary to remove diseased bowel and a ileostomy is formed for evacuation of stool; an appliance bag that adheres to the outside of your body.

Being diagnosed with Crohn’s disease is something that literally changes a person’s life forever. They’re being told that the symptoms they’ve been experiencing, such as abdominal pains, severe diarrhea and bloody stools, are those of a serious inflammatory bowel disease. What’s most devastating to learn is that there is no cure for Crohn’s disease and that it is going to get worse as time goes on. Their doctor will determine a specific Crohns disease treatment based on how far along their condition is and the hope is that it will reduce the IBD symptoms to some degree but at best, it will only slow down the eventual progression. The fact that a person has to prepare for a lifetime of Crohns disease treatment brings with it consequences beyond their individual health.Crohn’s surgery is frequently recommended by doctors in the later stages of the inflammatory bowel disease. Even when well insured, this kind of care is costly and they may find themselves struggling to pay their medical bills. This problem is only worsened when their Crohn’s symptoms make it difficult for them to continue or maintain employment, which also means they could lose the insurance they do have. A leading cause of Crohn’s disease is now known to be linked to past use of Accutane. The medication, which was released in the early 1980s, was prescribed to those suffering from severe acne and in some cases, proved to be fairly effective. Over the course of the next few decades, an estimated 16 million people used Accutane with no indications from the drug’s manufacturers, Roche Pharmaceuticals, of any potential long term risks. However, research began to reveal that there were some possible Accutane side effects that would be quite severe. These studies linked Accutane users with an increased risk of inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn’s disease. The FDA issued strict Accutane warnings and Roche Pharmaceuticals took the product off shelves in 2009. Some of those former patients, particularly those undergoing Crohns disease treatment, have taken legal action in the form of an Accutane lawsuit. These cases have frequently been successful and resulted in Roche Pharmaceuticals financially compensating these victims and helping to cover the costs of their Crohns treatment. A free legal consultation is available from one of the nation’s top firms, the Law Offices of Chandler, Mathis, & Zivley, PC. With their help, you can determine if moving forward with an Accutane lawsuit is right for you and your family.
