Just as in 2007 with Lyrica and again in 2008 with Cymbalta, the fibromyalgia community is abuzz in anticipation of Savella, the third drug approved by the FDA for the treatment of fibromyalgia. That this news should garner such attention is not really surprising given the level of involvement and sophistication among fibromyalgia patients, but we should always remember to temper our expectations with a bit of sobriety. A little rational analysis can tell us a lot about how these drugs were developed, and what can be reasonably expected from them.
When Pfizer?s Lyrica was approved by the FDA in June of 2007 it became the first prescription medication indicated for the treatment of fibromyalgia. It?s approval represented not only a hope for better individual treatment, but also a kind of validation for the fibromyalgia community at large. After years of struggling just to be heard by the medical establishment, fibromyalgia sufferers were suddenly watching Big Pharma recognize fibromyalgia as a treatable condition.
Not surprisingly, the drug has been a big winner for Pfizer. Lyrica?s fibromyalgia sales have been brisk from the start and are expected to grow to 1 million by 2016. In light of these numbers, it is easy to understand Pfizer?s motivation in pursuing the FDA approval. Fibromyalgia is not a disease but a syndrome of imbalance or disorder of the body organ system especially the musculo-skeletal system. The symptoms include back pain, chronic fatigue, stress, distress, sleep deprivation and general feeling of unwell. Most orthodox doctors have little knowledge of the cause and the cure; while most naturopaths address the pain component and are silent about the first component of fibromyalgia which is the fibrosis. It is the fibrosis that setup the inflammation and the pain in the first place. Going back further, it is the oxidants that trigger the oxidative stress that cause the inflammation and back pain. Metabolic enzymes like nattokinase and serrapeptase come to eat away the fibrin proteins which are the precursors of the muscle fibrosis in fibromyalgia. Recall that wherever there is inflammation, pain is nearly always present. These proteolytic (systemic) enzymes (eating away fibrin proteins) are the missing link in the treatment of back pain and muscle spasm triggers associated with fibromyalgia.
It is estimated that 5 million people in the United States suffer from fibromyalgia. Nearly 90% of these surferers are women. Prompting the fact that fibrosis causing estrogens like esradiol may be involved in the causal mechanism. Estradiol is a fibrosis striving bad estrogen that has been implicated in inflammation.

Question by Julie Cash: What are some good ways to relieve fibromyalgia pain?
My mom has fibromyalgia and severe arthritis all threw her body but it mostly effects her neck back legs and hips. She is on 8 – 10 pills a day just to relieve her pain. Does anybody know of ANY ways she could maybe get some natural relieve from her pain instead of taking all these pills. She is in serious pain and I just want to help her out.
Best answer:
Answer by oldgoatLet her take her pills without any guilt or judgment on your part. Believe it or not that’s a huge deal with Fibro patients. First doctors didn’t believe fibro was real, then they ran in to the current wave of sensationalism and hysteria about the dangers of pain drugs. Any narcotic she may be on is far safer than plain tylenol is. Do the research. Narcotics are one of the safest class of drugs there is if they are taken as prescribed by a competent physician. I don’t mean to berate you, but day after day of the same BS misinformed opinions from people who have their hearts in the right place is frustrating and sad at the same time. I hope I did not offend you, but understanding pain really is a huge deal and too . . . → Read More: What are some good ways to relieve fibromyalgia pain?
