Gout is a type of arthritis that manifests when there is a build-up of uric acid in the joints. There are two kinds of gout: acute and chronic. The difference between acute gout and then chronic variety is that in acute cases, only one joint is typically affected, while chronic cases are characterized by recurring episodes that involve many joints.

While gout is essentially caused by high uric acid levels, not everyone with a lot of uric acid in their system actually have gout. Gout is hereditary, and predominant in males and women who are post-menopausal, but the cause of gout is still unclear. The risk of developing gout is further elevated by the use of medications which could increase the levels of uric acid in the blood. It is also normal for people with diabetes, leukemia, and kidney disease to look for gout treatment since those conditions increase chances of developing gout.

Would you consider treatment for gout?

You may be needing gout treatment if you have the following symptoms.

Acute gout typically develops suddenly so watch out for a joint or two in pain. The areas that are usually affected most are the joints in the ankles, knees, and large toes. Gout pain is described to be as excruciating, crushing, or throbbing.

It is typical during the night that these types of pains will begin. Gout treatment may be needed if the affected joint is warm, red, and tender. Placing just a blanket over the same also could induce pain. There is fever. There are recurring attacks.

Medical treatment for gout.

The usual treatment for gout involves anti-inflammatory drugs like indomethacin, naproxen, or ibuprofen as soon as symptoms manifest, with prescriptions scheduled for 4 to 10 days. Once you have any inflammation in check, you may wish to obtain some pain killers to increase your comfort level. The quickest relief is achieved through a corticosteroids injection at the inflamed site. Once treatment starts, it should only take 12 hours to relieve pain, with complete relief achieved within 48 hours.

Eating your way out of gout.

When treating gout you have to careful about what you eat since some kinds of food can cause gout attacks. Some of the food you should keep in moderation or completely avoid depending on the severity of your gout attack include: alcohol, sardines, organ meats, anchovies, spinach, legumes, cauliflower, asparagus, and baked goods – because of brewer’s yeast. Beware of drinks with too much sugar- because high fructose corn syrup is a cause of gout.

To keep gout attacks at bay, on the other hand, you can also increase your intake of dairy products and carbohydrates. There has been no link established between foods high in protein and gout, so continued moderate consumption of meat is still safe.

Can you prevent gout from ever beginning?

Unfortunately, you can’t do anything about preventing gout from ever taking hold. What you can work on though is to prevent gout by avoiding what triggers the attacks for you. To avoid gout, with it’s huge amount of pain and complications follow this advice.
