Available Sleep Apnea Treatment Options Various treatment options are available for treating this sleep disorder. Sleep apnea causes chronic sleep deprivation resulting from periodic breathing pauses that can last more than 10 seconds and occur as many as 50 times per hour. These breathing pauses frequently jolt one from sleep, making sleeping shallow and foregoing the deep and restorative sleep the body needs to be active and alert the next day. These breathing pauses frequently jolt one from sleep, making sleeping shallow and foregoing the deep and restorative sleep the body needs to be active and alert the next day. If you believe or someone you know suffers from this sleep disorder, you need to know what treatment options are available.

Three classifications of sleep apnea:

Obstructive sleep apnea or OSA – is the most common. When throat muscles relax during sleep, the air passages may become blocked because soft tissues around the throat and nasal passages also relax thus impeding the free flow of airCentral sleep apnea or CSA – during sleep, there is an imbalance in the brain’s respiratory control center disrupting the signals between the brain and the diaphragm muscles that control breathingMixed apnea or complex sleep apnea – patients show symptoms of OSA but when the cause of the airway blockage is cleared, the patient will then exhibit CSA symptoms as well Some of the common symptoms are:

Loud and incessant snoringChoking or shortness of breathBreathing pauses for more than 10 secondsDrowsiness during daytimeWaking up thirstyHeadaches in the morningIntermittent sleepInsomniaWaking up due to shortness of breath and/or chokingDifficulty concentrating when awakeMelancholy or depressionWhen symptoms become apparent, it is advisable to see a medical practitioner, specifically a sleep specialist, for an official diagnosis. They will administer a sleep study or Polysomnography test conducted in a sleep lab. Only a trained professional can prescribe the correct sleep apnea treatment . Once properly diagnosed, your doctor can recommend one of many available sleep apnea cures.

Sleep Apnea Treatment for OSA:Therapy There are several sleep apnea machines available to treat OSA. One treatment option is Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Therapy or CPAP. A mask which is hooked to a machine that supplies air under constant pressure is worn over the mouth and nose while sleeping. Positive air pressure is utilized to keep the user’s airways open. This however may bring discomfort to some people because the user must exhale against the air pressure supplied by the CPAP machine.Another treatment option is a BIPAP or bi-level adjustable airway pressure device. This device automatically adjusts the air pressure while exhaling. More pressure is provided when inhaling and less when exhaling making it easier to exhale for many users.Oral appliances can also be worn to treat OSA. They can also be effective as stop snoring devices. These devices can keep the throat open by helping to keep the jaw and tongue in proper alignment when lying down. These are easier to use than the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure and BI-Level Positive Airway machines but the latter are often more effective.Surgery Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty is one type of surgical option where tissues around the back of the mouth and the top of the throat are removed to help open the air passages that can cause restriction.Maxillomandibular Advancement (MMA) or orthognathic surgery is a type of treatment where the jaw is moved forward away from the other face bones to also open the airways. MMA is sometimes performed in conjunction with Genioglossus advancement which pulls the base of the tongue forward. While these procedures have proven to be very effective in treating OSA, other sleep apnea treatment options are usually attempted first due to the pain and recovery periods associated with these surgeries.Another effective treatment is the Pillar Procedure. It is a minor surgical procedure, often performed in a doctor’s office under local anesthetic. Small polyester rods are inserted into the soft palate. This helps to stiffen the palate thereby preventing the vibrations that contribute to sleep apnea and snoring. It does not require the removal of any soft palate tissue. Consequently, the recovery period is much faster with less negative side effects.A tracheostomy is the last resort for sleep apnea treatment because this involves making an opening in the front of the throat and inserting a breathing tube, thereby bypassing the mouth and nasal passages to ease the disorder. Sleep Apnea Treatment for CSA:TherapyCentral sleep apnea can be caused by other medical problems such as congestive heart failure and stroke, thus it is necessary to treat them first to effectively treat the sleep disorder. As with all medical conditions, it’s important to first identify the cause. Once diagnosed, treatment for the associated medical problems is an important step in your treatment. Other treatment options include:

Supplemental oxygen while sleeping can also be prescribed as a sleep apnea treatment.Continuous Positive Airway Passage which is prescribed for OSA can also be prescribed to treat CSA.Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure which supplies greater air pressure when one inhales and less air pressure when exhaling can also be effective in treating CSA.Adaptive Servo-Ventilation – this makes use of a computer to monitor breathing patterns and creates increased air pressure if breathing becomes abnormal. This is one of the latest and probably more successful treatment options for CSA. Sleep apnea is a serious medical condition that causes millions of people to suffer. From the social consequences of snoring to the reduced work productivity caused by lack of sleep to the industrial and highway accidents caused by lack of concentration and drivers falling asleep at the wheel, the costs associated with sleep apnea are in the billions of dollars. Fortunately, people do not have to suffer in vain. There are many successful options available for sleep apnea treatment.

Am I at risk of developing sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea can afflict any individual at any age. However, certain factors can increase the likelihood of developing the condition, including:

? Old age ? Genetics ? Gender ? Obesity ? Smoking ? High blood pressure

Does everyone who suffers from sleep apnea experience the same symptoms?

No. While symptoms may overlap, three types of sleep apnea exist and influence potential symptoms.

The types of sleep apnea are:

? Obstructive Sleep Apnea ? Those who suffer from this type of sleep apnea will awaken with a sudden gasping or choking noise. This experience is not remembered and victims believe they had a full night?s sleep. An airway obstruction reduces brain oxygen levels until the brain rouses you from sleep to clear the impediment.? Central Sleep Apnea ? Victims of central sleep apnea are roused from sleep due to the brain failing to regulate breathing muscles. Men and women who suffer from this form of sleep apnea remember waking.? Complex Sleep Apnea ? A combination of central and obstructive sleep apnea.

What treatment options are available for sleep apnea?

For victims of obstructive sleep apnea, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon can perform bimaxillary surgery (orthognathic surgery), which will adjust the tongue muscles in order to move the tongue forward. This procedure will provide an adequate gap between the tongue and throat in order to prevent future obstruction.

If you suffer from mild sleep apnea, you can attempt behavioral changes in order to minimize suffering, such as:

? Losing weight? Adjusting sleep positions? Reducing alcohol intake before bedtime? Not taking sleeping pills before sleeping

Of the different forms of sleep apnea, central sleep apnea is one of the rarest kinds that do not affect too many people and in fact, it occurs just because there may be problems receiving and transmitting brain signals which result in periodic stopped breathing while you are sleeping. What’s more, if you happen to have this rare form of sleep apnea, you may also become affected by obstructive sleep apnea that is the more common form of sleep apnea and which, as the name implies, occurs due to blocked or obstructed airways.

Using A Drug Called Ambien

Certainly, there are many different types of treatment methods available for handling obstructive sleep apnea, though the same cannot be said in the case of central sleep apnea, even in spite of recent advancements in using a sleep drug named Ambien that will surely benefit you in case you use it to treat central sleep apnea. However there is no doubting the fact that, according to evidence gathered as a result of studies made on patients using Ambien to cure central sleep apnea, the effectiveness of Ambien has been proven to be quite good, and this can be seen when considering that the drug helped in reducing sleep apnea episodes from an average of thirty to thirteen per patient.

However, there is still need to study the long term effects of Ambien as a drug to treat central sleep apnea and thus before considering using it for your central sleep apnea problem, be apprised that Ambien has yet to be fully tested for this use and you should also not use it unless specifically recommended by your doctor.

It would also pay to know the difference between central sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea and even become aware whether you don’t in fact have a third type of sleep apnea, which is known as mixed sleep apnea that is basically a combination of both types of sleep apnea types.

Also, though the symptoms of both obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea can sometimes be similar, the causes for each kind are more than likely going to be different in each case. As mentioned, central sleep apnea is a very rare type of sleep apnea and it is quite unlike the more common obstructive sleep apnea, and if you have the former, you will surely experience difficulties in brain timing, which when it does not fire the way that it should will result in inadequate oxygen while you are sleeping.

Also, it is common for those suffering from central sleep apnea to wake up numerous times during the night and they will also gasp or choke for breath, and such episodes can occur as many as hundred times in a night thereby robbing the patient of valuable sleep and rest.

So, whether you suspect having central sleep apnea or obstructive sleep apnea, you need to consult your doctor and get a treatment program prescribed at the earliest in order to get much needed relief.

Sleep apnea is the state where you discontinue breathing in the night for small intervals. There are three kinds of sleep apnea, including central, mixed and obstructive. Out of these, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is caused because of blockage of airway, generally when the throat’s soft issues collapses and closes while sleeping. The central sleep apnea happens when the airway does not gets blocked, however the brain stops signaling the muscles to respire. On the other hand, mixed apnea is a fusion of central and obstructive sleep apnea. With every apnea event, brain briefly arouses individual with sleep apnea to resume breathing, consequently sleep is extensively fragmented and not of good quality.

There are other sleep apnea’s symptoms that someone else might note when you sleep, including: * Apnea that may occur as less as five times in an hour (mild apnea) to above than fifty times in an hour (severe apnea), which determines the severity of sleep apnea * High snoring, although majority of the individuals suffering from sleep apnea snore, but not every individual who snore suffers from sleep apnea* Turning while sleeping and restless tossing* Gasping spells or night time choking

Sleep apnea and obesity

When it comes to finding out reasons of sleep apnea, one of the main causes noticed highly is obesity. Obesity is a leading cause of sleep apnea and one can eliminate the symptoms and breathe simply through getting weight loss surgery. Through weight loss surgery when you lose as less as ten percent of your weight, you can considerably reduce your risk of getting sleep apnea.

Getting weight loss surgery, you can successfully assist an individual suffering from sleep apnea to get rid off the disease and get a proper sleep. The best part of weight loss surgery is that it allows you to shed off excess weight in a very little span, which otherwise putting off through traditional mediums would take loads of time.

The studies have proved that people who do not get adequate amount of sleep contains higher level of cortisol within their system as compared to those who take enough sleep. High level of cortisol, can lead to put on weight, which consequently causes sleep apnea. Through weight loss surgery the level of cortisol can be decreased, and the problem of sleep apnea can be cured.

Remaining untreated, obesity and sleep apnea, collectively can have detrimental effects over your mood, weight and most importantly your social life. Also, your souse might also go through the same symptoms, since they will too have insufficient sleep because of your loud snoring and odd sleeping patterns.

Try browsing for sleep apnea tests on the net. It has questions to evaluate if you’re showing indicators of sleep apnea. Extremely loud snoring and having breaks in inhalation whilst asleep is the major sign of sleep apnea. If the examination indicates that you have got most of the symptoms, then it’s time to verify this with your medical doctor.

Sleep apnea test by your main medical doctor

The first step of your sleep apnea test will be conducted by your primary health care provider. You’ll be posed a couple of questions dealing with your personal and family medical background. Ask your family and immediate relatives if they know of any family members who also suffer from sleep apnea. This specific sleep ailment normally runs in the family. Prior to going to the doctor, it would also help for you to maintain a sleep diary for a week. This will enable your doctor figure out your sleep problem. Other people even record a video of themselves whilst slumbering just to find out how loudly they snore. Most sufferers are not aware of how they breathe whilst asleep.

A physical check-up is also necessary for your doctor to pinpoint the cause of the signs and symptoms. Your physician will inspect the soft palate at the backside of your mouth, tonsils, tongue and adenoids. If any of these are enlarged, it may be causing you to snore. Your nasal passage will also be examined if you have a deviated septum or other nasal obstruction. Other cases could be a lot more critical such as a brain or neurological disorder. Once your doctor determines the cause, you’ll most likely be sent to a sleep expert.

Sleep apnea test by a sleep professional

Sleep professionals are health professionals who have specialized in learning sleep associated conditions. You can be referred possibly to a pulmonologist (lungs), neurologist (brain) or otolaryngologist (throat). Some dental practitioners likewise have specific education in sleep medicine. They offer dental appliances to help stop loud snoring and prevent sleep apnea. Your sleep expert will need to depend on the final result of a sleep study to suggest the appropriate therapy. You could then be referred to a sleep lab for proper medical diagnosis.

Based on that, the most effective treatment solutions is going to be prescribed. A sleep apnea test inside a sleep facility is often conducted overnight only by a method known as polysomnogram. Before you go to sleep, electrodes or sensors are going to be fastened to several parts of your body. One is going to be put on your scalp, face, limbs, chest and fingertips. These sensors will log your brain activity, blood pressure, muscle activity, eye movement and breathing rate. This will all be accomplished whilst you are asleep. It’s a painless process and all you have to do is go to sleep. The only dilemma with sleep clinics is the high cost of diagnosis. With luck, your health insurance can pay for the expense of medical examination and treatment method.

Sleep apnea test professionally conducted at home

To solve the high price of sleep apnea tests, a home-based sleep assessment is available in the market. It is basically lower priced and could be conducted at the conveniences of your private home. When ordered, it usually comes to you in a package. Inside the box is a unit that will look like a small computing device with a monitor. Directions are included inside the box and all you have to do is follow them. You will need to connect the sensors to various points of your body then turn the machine on. There are different types and models of home sleep test kits so the testing procedure could vary. After your overnight tests, you can have the final results mailed back to the clinic and they’ll be the one to interpret the results for you. Go back to your sleep doctor for a proper treatment prescription.

Have you dreamed about effective sleep apnea treatments after yet another night of restless sleep? Apnea can turn a pleasant eight hours into a very draining experience. The next day you might find yourself drowsy or just generally cranky. Nobody wants that for themselves and you shouldn’t settle for it. With a variety of sleep apnea treatments and prevention methods, you can get your apnea under control and look forward to restful nights and productive days once again. For you, apnea can be a thing of the past! Keep reading if you want to find out how.

Apnea occurs when your breathing pattern during sleep is disrupted. Your breathing might simply be lowered in rhythm and intensity or it might be paused completely for a short time. There are two primary types of apnea: obstructive and central. Obstructive sleep apnea happens when the tissue at the back of your throat collapses and blocks your breathing for a short period. Central sleep apnea occurs when the brain does not signal your body to breathe as efficiently as it normally does. A third type, complex sleep apnea, is a mixture of the two cases. This all probably sounds somewhat alarming, doesn’t it? Fortunately, apnea can be effectively managed.

Sleep apnea symptoms include daytime fatigue, moodiness, dry mouth, morning headaches, and of course restless sleep. Also, you may have apnea if you are a loud snorer. However, you can’t determine if you have apnea just by these symptoms. Usually a spouse or someone who sleeps with you will be able to alert you to the fact that your breathing is actually stopping during sleep. You’ll need to have a sleep study done to tell conclusively. If you have any of these symptoms and suspect you may have apnea, whether you have been told or not, you should see your doctor. This advice should be followed especially if you live alone and have no one around to tell you of your breathing patterns while you’re asleep.

You may be at risk for apnea if you are overweight, over 65 years of age, or smoker. Men are at a higher risk for apnea than women. Also, if you have a family history of apnea, you are more likely to develop the condition. There are steps you can take on your own to lessen your apnea problems. Losing weight if you’re overweight and quitting smoking are two great ways to reduce your issues. Sleeping on your side will help prevent your tongue from blocking your air passages. In addition, keeping a regular sleep schedule helps greatly as apnea occurrences tend to decline when you are well rested.

These self-help methods are definitely effective, but you may require some stronger sleep apnea treatments to get your problems under control. A common and effective treatment for advanced cases of apnea is CPAP, or Continuous Positive Airflow Pressure. CPAP is a device that continuously pumps air into your breathing passageways to keep them open while you sleep. You wear a CPAP device over your face like a mask. If you find it’s not very comfortable, don’t give up on it! With a little adjustment, your CPAP machine can quickly become a regular and beneficial part of your sleep routine. Other sleep apnea treatments include bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP) machines and devices that keep your throat open during sleep.

Usually, treatments like CPAP are enough to deal with your problem. The discomfort of a CPAP machine may be too much for you to handle, however, or it may just be ineffective for you. Another option for alleviating your problems is sleep apnea surgery. There are a variety of surgical methods available such as shifting your jaw forward, removing tonsils, or removing excess tissue. These are aimed at opening your throat wider in order to better the airflow. You should consult your doctor about the specifics of any invasive surgery.

You don’t have to suffer through apnea problems any more. There is a wide variety of sleep apnea treatments for you to explore! Talk to your doctor about the best way for you to combat your apnea so you can feel the benefits of good, restful sleep once again.

Sleep apnea is a condition where a person stops breathing for a short space of time while they are asleep.

Sleep apnea comes in three types; Obstructive(OSA) central(CSA) and a complicated mix of the two. 84% of most sleep apnea cases are Obstructive sleep apnea. Without proper sleep Apnea treatment this condition can cause serious consequences.

What Is OSA? When we fall asleep our muscles tend to relax including the muscles of the throat. In cases, of sleep apnea these relaxing muscles block the airway allowing less oxygen to pass through the airway and into the body. The brain sensing the lack of needed oxygen sends a message for you to wake up which allows you to start breathing once more. Sufferers of sleep apnea are often unaware that they have this condition. These wakeful moments can occur up to 30 times an hour and the person dosen’t even know it is happening. Since the sufferer is not aware that he suffers from this condition he does nothing to seek sleep apnea treatments which can restore him to a restful night’s sleep.

Since the sufferer is not aware that he suffers from this condition he does nothing to seek sleep apnea treatments which can restore him to a restful night’s sleep.

It is usually a roommate like a partner, wife or husband that tells the person that they have this problem. Some people when they suffer from a cold can have bouts of sleep apnea but this usually only lasts a short period of time unlike many sufferers of sleep apnea which can last for years without being treated. As with all sleep problems in adults sleep apnea can intefere with ones health and make you feel tied and fatigued through out the day, if you suffer from sleep deprivation then it is possible that you suffer from all the common sleep problems in adults which include:

Irritability

Increased incidents of accidents

Decrease in the ability to think and problem solve

Raised blood pressure

Increased risk of heart disease and other serious health conditions

Diagnosis of sleep apnea is done by studying the patient during sleep and noting how many incidents of sleep apnea occur. Then depending on the severity of the condition, Sleep apnea treatment is begun. Treatment consists of keeping the airway unobstructed during sleep.

The treatment of sleep apnea often includes: Devices to keep the airway open, changes to life style and in severe cases surgery. If you are overweight, smoke or drink alcohol then your doctor will insist that you modify your life style in order to help relieve your sleep apnea.

In many cases, a few lifestyle changes and throat and nose muscle strengthening exercises may be all that is needed to cure your apnea and get a good night’s sleep. If you have sleep apnea then it is up to you to take a active approach in getting this problem resolved. This means that you learn all you can about your condition through reading and asking your medical expert questions that help you to understand the problem. Start making small changes in your lifestyle such as changing sleeping positions, doing exercises to strengthen your throat muscles, lowering your weight if overweight and quitting smoking and cutting back on your alcohol consumption.

Most importantly follow the Sleep apnea treatment program laid out by your doctor and explore other ways of helping you deal with with this and other sleeping problems in adults.

Question by Free Thinker: How well does a tonsillectomy cure sleep apnea?
I have sleep apnea and have a tonsillectomy scheduled for later this year. How well does this fix sleep apnea?

Best answer:

Answer by Dan1284Tonsillectomies alone do not ‘cure’ sleep apnea. Surgical remedies for sleep apnea usually are for those patients that do not respond well to other treatments, usually surgery is a last resort.

The correct term for the surgery is called a Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, it removes parts or all of the uvula, soft palate, tonsils, adenoids, and pharynx. Its success rate is about 50%. Basically its a coin flip.

The tonsillectomy could work, only if its enlarged. Same goes with the other parts that I listed above. The enlarged tissue(s) tend to obstruct your airway when you sleep, especially when you lie on your back.

I would recommend getting a second opinion and see if your doctor would recommend a sleep study performed on you. Also check with your insurance if it is covered.

Usually, sleep apnea can be resolved with diet and treatment using a CPAP machine (Continous Positive Airway Pressure). It can significantly improve your sleep.

Good luck and have a good night’s sleep!

Usually, sleep apnea can be resolved with diet and treatment using a CPAP machine (Continous Positive Airway Pressure). It can significantly improve your sleep.

Good luck and have a good night’s sleep!
