Barry Sears authors popular books talking about a diet that recommends “hormonal thinking” rather than “caloric thinking” as a way to eat. The concept is that the evolution of the human body tells us that the when people consume the correct ratio of carbohydrate to protein to fat (40/30/30) they are healthier, happier and wiser overall.

The “40/30/30″ refers to the ratio of calories obtained daily from carbohydrates, proteins and fats respectively. Studies have shown that this ration can result in weight loss.Sears says “The Zone” is ideal hormone balance. We need to be careful about our insulin levels making sure they remain balanced, not too high or too low. When in the zone, the body does not waste time storing excess calories as fat. Essentially Sears believes that low-fat diets will increase insulin and cause the body to store more fat. He points out that even though Western diets are filled with low-fat carbs, people are fatter than ever. The Zone Diet proclaims that fat consumption is necessary for “burning” fat. Certain fats will produce the fullness feeling and help determine the rate carbs are taken into the bloodstream. The slower carb absorption will also lower insulin levels and, thus, creates less stored fat. The resulting higher insulin levels make us feel tired.

Your body metabolism will slow down and cause cravings for high-carb snacks. The Zone Diet says we create the trap of cravings that continues the cycle indefinitely.

The Zone Diet says that people eat too many carbohydrates that create far too much insulin for the body to handle efficiently. This causes a number of health problems including arthritis, cancer and heart disease.

The Zone Diet argues that a diet low in carbs and higher in protein along with lower fat consumption will create a “zone” that is optimal for human life. The problem according to The Zone Diet is that the human body is unable to store fat and burn fat at the same time. The Zone Diet tells its readers to eat every something every five hours during the day. It calls for the elimination of the foods everyone knows are problematic (chips, candy, starch).

The Zone Diet highly recommends eating vegetables, lean proteins, lentils and nuts. These are the low glycemic healthy foods. It is not surprising that The Zone Diet does perform for its adherents as it is actually low in calories. The sample meal plans call for fewer than 1500 calories intake per day.

Sears says the low-carb diets, like Atkins, miss the target. These diets produce water loss quickly and the dieter thinks he is losing fat.

The Zone Diet Do’s and Don’ts

Carbohydrates are bad. These include rice, muffins, pastries, chocolate, candy bars, sugar, preserves, pasta, and breakfast cereals.

Fruits and vegetables are good. In addition, skinless chicken, turkey and fish are recommended for most meals.

Most fruit and vegetables are allowed. Low-fat protein-rich foods such as skinless chicken, turkey and fish should be eaten with every meal. Meanwhile, eating fewer foods that contain saturates and choosing foods that are rich in monounsaturates, such as olive oil, avocado and nuts, is recommended.

Think about the value of eating fruits and vegetables instead of, say, one 650 calorie McDonald’s burger for lunch. If you eat a light salad with 100 calories and an apple with 60 calories for lunch that will reduce your calorie intake at least 450 calories per day. Over a year that could be 40 pounds!Weight loss: Following The Zone Diet religiously you can expect to lose over five pounds in the first two weeks and after that, about 1.5 pounds per week.

Problems with the Zone Diet

The instructions are complex. You will need to buy scales and spoons to do it right. Some fiber foods are not allowed like wholegrain cereals. Cheese, in limited portions, can be very healthful. The Food Blocks recommended by The Zone Diet make it nearly impossible to dine out at a restaurant. What fun is that? This plan is just too complicated.

The Zone Diet is not recommended by the American Heart Association because it lacks recommends high-protein consumption and it lacks required nutrients.

However, on the whole, the zone diet is a highly effective and safe way to lose weight, and improve your health. Wonder why it’s the diet of choice for so many? The diet calls for 40% carbs, 30% protein, and 30% fat. Therefore, the majority of the calories are from carbs. So why do people bash it claiming that it is a carb-restrictive diet?

Question by jrenfree83: Why is the Zone Diet considered low-carb?
The diet calls for 40% carbs, 30% protein, and 30% fat. Therefore, the majority of the calories are from carbs. So why do people bash it claiming that it is a carb-restrictive diet?

Best answer:

Answer by cyn_texas
The current recommendation for carbohydrates by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is 55% of total calories. USDA recommends 15% protein and 30% fat, respectively. The protein levels in various low carb diets display less variation ranging from 20% to 30%, and fat levels from 30% to 65%.

U.S. government guidelines were changed 35 years ago to suggest we lower our fat intake & increase our carb intake. American society followed these recommendations & lowered their fat intake by 11% & increased their carb consumption. In this same time frame obesity, diabetes, heart disease are all at epidemic levels. Through their direct effects on insulin & blood sugar, refined carbohydrates are the dietary cause of coronary heart disease & diabetes.

There is no better way to bring the body to the state of optimal health than with a low carb way of eating. Low carb doesn’t cause high blood pressure, high blood sugar or high cholesterol, it cures it. It is actually dangerous to take meds that lower these levels and do low carb at the same time because the levels will become dangerously low. Carbohydrates trigger insulin. High insulin levels unbalance other hormones. Anything less that 9 grams of carbs per hour controls insulin and is considered low carb (up to 144 grams per day).

Glucose is the bodies preferred fuel (if you want to get technical, it actually burns alcohol most efficiently, but that doesn’t make it any healthier for the body than carbs), the body can convert 100% of carbs, 58% of protein & 10% of dietary fat into glucose. The body can also be fueled by fat (dietary fat & fat cells) but only in the absence of carbs. Your brain actually prefers* to be fueled by ketones (part of the fat burning process), it does require glucose also, but glucose can be easily converted from excess protein if needed or dietary fat.

Plaque build up in the arteries is more attributable to carb consumption than dietary fats, which seems to be the conclusion of the following study. Carb consumption raises triglycerides & VLDL (bad cholesterol). Fats raise the HDL (good cholesterol). High triglyceride levels & low HDL levels are an indicator of plaque & glycation – the precursors to a heart attack & heart disease.

study from the Oxford group examining the postprandial (after-eating) effects of a low-fat vs. low-carbohydrate diet. (Roberts R et al, 2008)

Postprandial lipoproteins, you’d think, would be plentiful after ingesting a large quantity of fat, since fat must be absorbed via chylomicrons into the bloodstream. But it’s carbohydrates that figure most prominently in determining the pattern and magnitude of postprandial triglycerides and lipoproteins. Much of this effect develops by way of de novo lipogenesis, the generation of new lipoproteins like VLDL after carbohydrate ingestion.

Gary Taubes who wrote “Good Calories, Bad Calories” spent 7 years going through all the studies over the last century & dividing up the real science from the faulty science & concluded that low carb was the best way to control insulin levels which balances out other hormones & allows the body to function properly.

His main points are:

1. Dietary fat, whether saturated or not, is not a cause of obesity, heart disease or any other chronic disease.

2. The problem is refined carbs in diet, their effect on insulin secretion & the hormonal regulation of homeostasis.

3. Sugars – sucrose, high-fructose corn syrup specifically – are particularly harmful, the combination of fructose & glucose simultaneously elevates insulin levels & overload liver with carbs.

4. Through their direct effects on insulin & blood sugar, refined carbs, starches, sugars are the dietary cause of coronary heart disease & diabetes. They are likely dietary causes of cancer, Alzheimer’s & other diseases.

5. Obesity is a disorder of excess fat accumulation, not overeating.

6. Consuming excess calories does not cause us to grow fatter.

7. Fattening & obesity are caused by an imbalance in the hormonal regulation of adipose tissue & fat metabolism. Fat synthesis & storage exceed the mobilization of fat from adipose tissue & its subsequent oxidation.

8. Insulin is the primary regulator of fat storage. When insulin levels fall, we release fat from fat tissue.

9. By stimulating insulin secretion, carbs make us fat.

10. By driving fat accumulation, carbs also increase hunger & decrease the amount of energy we expend in metabolism & physical activity.

The Zone diet is one of the most popular diets on the market today, mainly because many celebrities use it, and this automatically makes it a fashionable diet in today’s society. However, just because your favourite celebrity swears by a diet plan, it does not mean that it’s the right diet for you. Everybody’s body is different, and everybody reacts in a different way than everyone else’s. For instance, the diet that worked wonders on your neighbour’s figure could add pounds to yours. You need to research the different diets that are available on the market today and talk to your doctor about which one is the right diet plan for you.

The Zone diet is called that because it talks about reaching a state of hormonal balance in the dieter’s body. This hormonal balance is called “the Zone.” The diet states that when your body is in the Zone, it can only then use your daily intake of calories to burn energy, and not to store fat. According to the Zone diet plan, each meal should contain a balanced ratio of 40% carbs, 30% fats, and 30% proteins for your body to be able to reach the Zone.

To stick with this diet, you simply have to follow the eating plan. This comes with many recipes that, when followed properly, will give your body the hormonal balance it needs to shed those excess pounds.

Some would say that the Zone diet is 100% healthy and beneficial to the body, but there are others who disagree. For example, research shows that the American Heart Association disapproves of this diet plan because they say that the diet’s eating plan does not provide enough essential nutrients for the body. However, a lot of people may find the Zone diet a good choice for them simply because of the foods it allows the dieter to eat. The Zone diet lets you to cool with olive oil, eat meat, cheese, milk, and actually encourages you to eat, eat, eat! Dieters are expected to eat 3 square meals a day, plus snacks in between. The only rule that the diet has about all of this eating is that the dieter stick to the recipes provided by the diet.

Every diet plan is different, and they all have their rules and regulations. One thing that they all have in common however is that the dieter has to follow the diet plan strictly in order to see any success in their weight loss. The Zone diet is no different from the rest in this rule. If you don’t follow the eating plan with patience, willpower and determination, your body will slowly cease to be in “the Zone”, and you will fail to lose that excess weight. On the other hand, if you choose to follow the diet plan, your body will stay in the Zone, and then you can and will enjoy your victory over the numbers on the bathroom scale.

Answer by i + iToo many factors to just throw out a number for you — how overweight (if at all) you are now, what kind of shape you are in, how closely you can follow the diet are all things that will determine the time-frame. For example, you could be one of those silly people that are skin and bone and still think you need to lose 10 pounds. Link below will give you a few details, but no legitimate trainer, dietitian, or nutrition counselor would ever give you a time period.

Question by Blah: Does the Zone diet (by Barry Sears) REALLY work!?
The Zone diet is the one where you have to consume 40% carbs, 30% proteins, 30% fat. Tell me what you know about this diet, or any experiences. I’m just trying to find a diet that really works for me. Also, there is a Zone program where they deliver the food everyday to your house, so that would be very comfortable because I could diet without counting calories or confused about the cooking part.

Best answer:

Answer by w8losschickHi There,

Yes, I believe the zone diet works and I have been eating like that for the last 12 years. I am 37 years old and I weigh the same today as I did when I was in high school and I have had two children, who are now 18 and 15.

Years ago people thought I was wacko for eating that way, in addition to taking the borage oil, fish oil and flaxseed oil softgels or putting flaxseed oil in my shake.

Today, studies are coming out saying that eating in that way, keeping control of your insulin level and taking all of those oils are extremely beneficial. I do not have any health problems and I am never sick. But I have made eating like this a way of life, and I . . . → Read More: Does the Zone diet (by Barry Sears) REALLY work!?

Yes, the zone delivery food system also works. I have put a few of my bosses on these systems and they worked quite well for them because the food was good and it was convenient.

Hope this helps!
