My boyfriend got diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 3 days before our daughter was born, 3 months later I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I am really worried for our 8 month old baby girl. We are going to watch her carb intake as she gets older but wanted to know what the chances were for her getting it are.

Most type 1 diabetics are in their later teens. My brother was seventeen. There has to be an auto immune process for type 1. Babies are still far to young for that stuff so it’s rare for kids. . . after ten maybe be looking for signs. Is it something your uncles or aunts or grandparents have also? Your boyfriends side especially. It’s genetically influenced along with environmental factors. The stress of you having the baby may or may not have added your boyfriends immune response. My brother was having a lot of physical stress when he was diagnosed during high school sports. He was also getting over a virus/cold. Our parents both have immediate relatives that are type 1 so it was in the genetic cards for him. He does great though. By the time your new baby is his age we’ll probably have a cure
The chances are small. Type 1 diabetes, she will have a bit larger of a risk for, but not that much of one. Type 2 diabetes, as long as she doesn’t get overweight she’ll be fine. There really isn’t a need to watch her carb intake as she gets older. People with Type 1 diabetes are born with an auto immune set off, which is normally in the pancreas. Then the person gets sick with something like the flu. The auto immune disorder is set of and your body sees the pancreas as a foreign body, which causes the cells in the pancreas to be attacked. Which mean your body will be receiving less and less insulin. Like I said, as long as she eats healthy and exercise regularly, she won’t get Type 2. Her risk for Type 1 diabetes is just the same as a child with parents with out type 1 diabetes. Make sure she gets plenty of vitamin D, there’s been a very big study on not getting enough vitamin D can help trigger Type 1 diabetes. And just to let you know there should be a cure for Type 1 diabetes in 5-15 years.
As you know, diabetes does not come from eating too many carbs.
I have a daughter that was dxed when she was 2 yrs old.She is now 20 and doing fine.
I agree with you that not allowing her to eat just McNuggets and cool aid are just healthy habits to get into.
You can’t just sit around and worry every day.The chances are not known.
Enjoy your daughter .
She has 60% chance of diabetes because her parents have this.
She is exposed of risk for having diabetes in future, however, nobody can tell you the exact chances. The most important thing is to know that these chances are real and to do the right things. Accumulate all the knowledge around diabetes and try to teach a healthy lifestyle to your baby. Be in close contact with your baby doctor.
Good luck!
