Diabetes is a medical condition characterized by the body’s failure to produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that participates in breaking down food into energy for the body to use. Diabetes is identified by a sudden increase in fatigue, irritability, a sharp loss in weight, & dry skin conditions. There is more. The body’s failure to produce insulin is identified as Type I diabetes, while the failure to properly use insulin is identified as Type II diabetes. Of the two, Type I diabetes is more severe & requires much more attention.

A person with diabetes has a blood glucose level that fluctuates. A diabetic’s blood glucose level increases & nerve sensitivity decreases, & the body loses fluids. There is more. The person also fails to sweat sufficiently when needed. This results in a drying effect on the skin, particularly in the legs, feet, & elbows. Diabetes dry skin is more serious than ordinary dry skin because of the increased likelihood of infection & disease.

People with diabetes experience more frequent & severe dry skin symptoms & complications. Diabetes also causes a decrease in nerve sensitivity at the extremities. Due to the decreased sensitivity, it’s often hard to notice skin conditions until the problems have escalated to a more serious degree. A common example of this would be the cracking of dry skin at the soles of a diabetic’s foot. The diabetic might not actually be fully aware of the dry skin & leaves it untreated for some time. After a while, the dry skin becomes so severe that cracks appear in the skin. Germs may then seep into the wound and, fed by the diabetic’s high levels of blood glucose, multiply quickly. The wound becomes infected & may lead to gangrene, which may require amputation to address.

The poor blood flow in the body of a person with diabetes may also slow the healing process, allowing the wound to gradually get worse.

In addition to dry skin, other skin problems may accompany diabetes. There is more. These include the following:

1. Necrobiosis lipoidica diabeticorum (”NLD”) is a rash that occurs on the lower legs. It’s more common in women, & there’re usually many spots. There is more. They are slightly raised shiny red-brown patches. There is more. The centers are often yellowish & may develop open sores that are slow to heal.

2. Diabetic dermopathy is a skin condition characterized by light brown or reddish, oval or round, slightly indented scaly patches most often appearing on the shins. It has been found to occur in up to 30% of patients with diabetes.

3. Bullosis diabeticorum are small to large blisters that develop underneath the skin & may rupture. And so… So far so good. While they’re sometimes quite large, they’re usually painless. 4. Acanthosis nigricans causes velvety dark brown to black lesions on the skin, usually on the neck, under the arms or in the groin. It’s more common among Hispanics & African Americans, & is often associated with being overweight.

In addition to all medication & practices suggested by doctors, treatment of diabetes dry skin involves a few simple self-care measures. For instance, including more fish in the diet will provide your body with high-quality oils such as Omega-3, which will help your skin retain moisture & make it look younger. Make the switch to all-cotton underwear, since it allows air to move around your body better than synthetic materials.

Fortunately, there’re some reliable methods for reducing the likelihood that you’ll experience lower back pain. This article is about one of the most effective, but least talked about ways that you can either limit you chances of experiencing lower back pain or relieve the back pain you may already be in.

Aerobic Exercise:

The method I’m talking about is aerobic exercise. For some people, the mention of the word “aerobic” conjures images of leotards, headbands, leg warmers, & lines of women dancing & stretching to music. This is only one form of aerobic activity. The word “aerobic” actually means “with oxygen”. Or in other words, aerobic activity is that which requires increased oxygen to perform. Aerobic exercise has many benefits including improved cardiovascular (heart & lung) health, general fitness, weight reduction and, as you’ll now learn, improved lower back health.

Low impact aerobic exercises actually nourish the muscles of the lower back. Low impact exercises include activities such as water aerobics, swimming, cycling, rowing, elliptical trainers, walking, etc. Any exercise that raises the heart rate to an aerobic zone without causing significant impact on the low back will help to reduce the occurrence of lower back pain. Exercises like jogging or jumping rope introduce high compressive forces on the spine & may not actually be best for reducing lower back pain.

To understand why aerobic exercise is so effective, you must understand that there’re two types of muscle in your body. They are fast-twitch & slow-twitch muscles.

The two types of muscle:

The fast-twitch muscles are the ones that control many of your voluntary movements. They are designed for speed & power. If you open & close your fist, you’re using your fast twitch muscles. These muscles use glucose for energy. Glucose is the energy that your body gets from carbohydrates through your diet. It travels through your blood or it can be stored in fat cells & muscle in the form of glycogen.

Slow-twitch muscle fibers are involuntary muscles that are built for endurance. These are the postural muscles of your body. Since the muscles of your lower back are primarily used for posture & endurance, they’re mostly slow-twitch muscles. This kind of muscle uses oxygen for energy. When they do not get enough energy these muscle become weak & tired. This can lead to lower back pain. Aerobic exercise increases the ability of your body to circulate the blood & get more oxygen to these endurance muscles. When the muscles are well nourished there is a lower likelihood that they will spasm or cause you pain.

Feed your muscles well & you’ll find that your lower back pain problems will be reduced. Remember to use low impact aerobic exercises on a regular basis to help control or stop lower back pain. As with any type of exercise program, it would be very wise to consult with your physician before you undertake any sort of aerobic training program to benefit your lower back. In the meantime it does not hurt to take more walks to increase your level of aerobic fitness & decrease your lower back pain.

Heart Disease - Our Modern Plague Resolved

In the last hundred years, our society has had to endure an ever-increasing plague affecting the lives of millions. Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) in the form of ‘Occlusive Cardiovascular Disease’, which is also known as ‘Atherosclerosis’ or ‘plaquing’ of the arteries is affecting younger & younger people with each passing generation. The disorder leads to the majority of our heart attacks, strokes & the spiraling costs of healthcare. It remains today as the leading cause of death by disease in the developed world.

Medical treatment of choice continues to be cholesterol-lowering drugs (statin drugs). Add to this the prescriptions for chest pains, high blood pressure, blood thinners, calcium beta-blockers, triglyceride etc. & you have a toxic cocktail mix taken by millions of people with only a poor prognosis to show for their efforts.
