Why does it seem like when you need it the most, a good nights sleep that is that you end up laying there staring at the ceiling? Ever been there? I sure have & it seems to come when I’ve to get up early for some important appointment. When I go straight to bed with a ‘do nothing day’ ahead of me, I can get to sleep pretty easy.
The answer to the problem is in the mind. The over-active mind is what keeps us up & prevents us from being to switch off & allow the peaceful, soothing balm of sleep to drift over us. So… So here I’m staring at the ceiling & it’s 2 hours past my ‘must’ be asleep time. Here is the first problem. Going to bed with some sort of artificial deadline set in our minds as to when we must be asleep. Let me be blunt here, did you ever attempt to go straight to the bathroom when some one was watching you… I mean you move up into the stall & fifty guys are behind you needing to do the same thing you are trying to do, & it just ain’t happening. In some sense it’s the same problem with trying to fall asleep on a schedule. The word to describe it’s PRESSURE!
I know you really need to be asleep & get a certain amount of sleep so plan for it… Uh, I said that word to is so hard for some of us to do, plan. Let me make another point here, I am not into the victim mentality that is so prevalent in our day. Most of the problems I’ve come from not planning. For example sticking with our not being able to fall asleep, did I look ahead at my evening & say, ‘Self if you really need to be asleep by 10, you better start shutting down the days processes around 9.’ I know all of us have watch slide programs. Right. When the show is over, the one who is in charge rushes in & takes the projector & sticks it back in its case right away, right? WRONG! If you will remember they switched off the power & what happened? The thing kept making noises, know what that noise was? It was the fan cooling off the bulb. The bulb needed to be cooled slowly so it did break. Do you see my point? The projector is running full tilt & needs the cool-down time. And so… So far so good. We’re no different.
Try it next time you have got a busy day coming up, I will be in touch with more help-ful hints on how to fall asleep. Good night
