Does wearing eyeglasses actually make your vision worse in the long run?

I know everyone says that it does, but my optometrist says it’s not true, and that NOT wearing your eyeglasses will make your vision worse faster. So why is there this great misconception?

your doc is only giving you half truth. he wants you to keep paying him and coming back of course. he wants yoru money. wearing glasses does nothing to HELP your eyes. it only slows down the process of bad eyesight.

Well maybe what they’re getting at is yes glasses may make your vision slightly worse in the long run, however you would be much worse off if you don’t wear glasses as your eyes are straining too much trying to get the right vision.

well actually i’ve heard about it.. but i’m wearing glasses almost 5 year and my vision hasn’t changed a bit….so you can say that wearing glasses is actually helping to save your vision… just give it a try… good luck

im not sure, but i’ve worn glasses since 2nd grade. when i first got them, i barely needed them, but right now, i can barely see my hand infront of my face! im 15 now. so i would say yes, they do make your eyes worse.

There are a lot of common misconceptions about glasses. As far as I have read, wearing glasses of your CURRENT prescription can cause over accommodation and you will be obliged to change your glasses almost every year.

If you are a myopic, you’d want to wear under-corrections. Just wear your current glasses as little as possible.

    Your optometrist is right.

    Good luck

I’ve heard the opposite – that your eyes get used to seeing perfectly so you notice it more if you don’t wear them, and that they would get worse anyway whether you wore them or not. Depends what you want to believe I suppose. Or whether you choose not to see very well just in case … your choice.
